merge two cells in a table

Dear All,

I have created table rows and columns but am unable to merge two cells in a table. Anyone can tell me a way to merge two cells.Am using XWPF class in Apache POI
.

Any answer could be appreciated..

Solution is for an excel file.
he asked about the XWPF which is the work package.

i would love a solution also.
all iv'e been told is that this is not supported and you need to manipulate the XML.
XML style example
couldn't really understand this example but people say it helps
