Please tell me how to take database backup in mysql using command line.and where it will be stored..i am using MySql 5.5

i tried this but its giving error..

mysql> mysqldump -uroot -p1234 demo > demo.sql
-> ;
ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that
corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql
dump -uroot -p1234 demo>demo.sql' at line 1
mysql> mysqldump --user root --password=1234 demo > demo.sql;
