For learning Java I would suggest Bruce Eckel's free electronic book: Thinking in Java, 3rd Edition. You could download a PDF version of this book here[^].

For beginners I would suggest:
Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# 2008: From Novice to Professional, Second Edition[^]
by Matthew MacDonald

The next step up after that next book, which I would highly recommend, is:
Pro ASP.NET 3.5 in C# 2008: Includes Silverlight 2, Third Edition[^]
by Matthew MacDonald and Mario Szpuszta
