A sudden slow-down for access 2016 VBA application

We are getting an unexpected (massive) slow-down in an Access 2016 VBA application over Citrix.
No code changes, possible anti-virus update, possible Windows update, possible Citrix and Security updates. Perhaps the number of records has reached some arbitrary limit or the DB size is too big?

Any wild theories (or experience)?

PS. Application was written solely by someone who has now retired a few months ago. It was apparently working fine until a couple of weeks ago.

What I have tried:

Repair and compact the database.

We need to justify attempts to roll back things or switch off (even temporarily) security stuff. So have to present a good theory to Mordac the Preventer of IT.

There is an absolute max size of 2GB on Access files, but you can link multiple files together. Is it stored on a sharepoint based environment- if so can it be physically located on a non-sharepoint platform?

Everything you listed is a possible cause, and then some. There is no way anyone is going to be able to tell you, "this is what's doing it". You're going to have to investigate all of these possibilities yourself.

After checking the size of the database to see if it's under 2G in size, I'd probably move on to any virus patches and definition updates, then move on to Windows and Office patches.

If you're getting to gigabyte size Access databases, you really need to migrate the app to use a real SQL server instead.
