how can a user also select a column to view in the application?

Use a query Specify the simple column in it like this:
"Select ColumnName from TableName"
get this column in datatable or dataset and show this column using any datacontrol you want.

Solution 1

In the whole System.Windows.Forms library, there is no such concept as the column selection. There are only the selection modes allowing to select some cell, set of cells, entire rows or set of rows. Even if you can select some cells of the same column, this is not selection of column.

I'm afraid to say, you will have to design you UI not relying on such feature as column selection.
