Is there a way I can run php functions inside a javascript function. I read some articles, and they mentioned using jquery and ajax, but I was required to use Javascript. Any advice???

My advise would be think more. The thing you want to do is achievable. But not the way you are thinking. First using AJAX call the php file, receive the result in format(depending on your need , may be you should look at JSON) and do farther process in javascript.

jQuery is JavaScript only.

Just a library containing JavaScript codes. Please use that, it makes life easier and simpler. :)
