how to develop an application which communicates the WiFi-embedded device

I am going to build a system similar as Spark core. I have no problem with the hardware development. But I know little about the software side. I need suggestions on how to write a program that can communicate with the WiFi module embedded PCB board, such as what book i need to read, what resources may facilitate the development, and the work principle of this program. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that help me to start this project.
