But I've never been able to bite any of those companies so I don't know what they taste, but I guess that the one with a taste more resemblant to bacon would win... Even if they don't have ListCtrls...

I'd have to agree here, even Apple Fans are beginning to acknowledge this, for example: Cult of Mac[^].
Funnily, one of the comments says that an exception where skeuomorphic design is preferrable is music software that looks like a traditional mixing desk. I couldn't disagree more. No sound engineer uses a mixing desk with one finger, and that's pretty well what you're constrained to do with a mouse. Even if the software is multi-touch enabled, the knobs are too small to operate sensitively with a finger. I can't help think there's a better alternative.

Personally I find this strange. I've been using Win 8 regularly on my home PC for a while now. After an initial "where the f**k is ...?" period while I attempted to find my way around, I quickly found myself at home with the new start screen arrangement.
On top of that, performance is significantly improved. Cakewalk (makers of the Sonar music software) tested various aspects of performance for audio software, for example, and found amongst other things drastically improved disk I/O performance, less kernel calls (with associated overheads of context switching).
We all stand to benefit from the optimisations made to get all this running on a tablet.

I generally like Apple's interface designs for mobile devices, but the font smoothing on text makes it nearly unreadable on relatively lower dpi desktop screens.
On Mac OSX it's possible to disable it in some cases but not all, and when it's off the text looks ugly, uglier than unsmoothed text on Windows. It just becomes hard to read in a different way.

All Apple's devices are equal, some customize is possible. The PC devices (windows) aren't the best visually, but in usability wins the apple devices. The Microsoft leaves the creativity with the user.
The beauty is ephemeral.
The developer side the Microsoft is a paradise.

If the tool is very poorly designed you may not be able to find even the most basic options. Save button? It's located on a button bar that's only visible when you press a button in the lower right corner five times 
Seriously, I've seen a program that used a lightblue font on a classic winform background. The program did everything it had to do, but if you didn't know what the buttons did you'd never know because you couldn't read the caption. I've been told the owner of the company who made that software is a little colour blind... To top it off they used a different icon than you're used to for all of the standard stuff. I can't remember what it was, but the save button did not have a diskette, the new button did not have a blank page etc. To show the error log you had to click a button with a picture of an actual bug on it. The icons were completely unrelated. Who could/want ever work with that!? 
Yeah, design matters...
As for my answer to the poll, Google. I like the way my browser looks (Chrome), I like the way my homepage looks (iGoogle), I like the way my email looks (GMail) and I like the way my favourite search engine looks (Bing, j/k Google  ).
That doesn't mean I don't like the others, I just like Google a bit more. Oh, by the way, the new metro design just doesn't do it for me...
It's an OO world.

I pick hardware and software for a specific purpose. Both can look as spartan as they like, as long as they fulfill this purpose. Design is just spice, not the main course.

you kidding dude just because you have no taste does not mean you're hardcore
despite fact I never spent a penny on iphone/ipad/mac boxes because of the extra cost, i admit they have much cleaner design PC and many appliance manufacturer really should pay attention to how an appliance fit into living space

Yes, a typical PC is not really a beauty, but it's practical. I don't have that box standing under my desk as decoration, but if you must, you can install the contents of that grey box inside almost anything.

That said, I pick for a specific purpose as well, and they need to do that purpose and not drive me up a wall in doing so. It was like the first time I was forced to use emacs while in school. "Wait, I have to hit what combination to save? Ctrl+x then Ctrl+s? Or was it Ctrl+W then Ctrl+s? Or was it v? Why can't it just have a menu and a 'Save' function?"
It drove me into the arms of Eclipse and their functional UI. Please note, this was when Eclipse was still a clean quick program. And we were forced to use emacs for the same reason you have to learn the long formulas in mathmatics.

Mom? Is that you? Remember when we went to buy a computer many years ago? The one that you wanted me to buy because it looked so great was an Amiga. They were obsolete at that time and they did not actually sell them anymore. They just had this last one on display to remember the good old times.
So, you call me stupid? Come over and explain that to me personally. Perhaps you will then find out how 'hardcore' I can get. I am aware that there are enough Muggles out there that would pay any price for a box full of electronics junk as long as you put it in a shiny case and tell them that they look great carrying it around. I don't need toys or shiny accessories because I can think of a few far more interesting things.
