Hi, in my experience many of the programmers I've met at companies like Cricket, IDD, Adobe, WildTangent, play musical instruments ... but, those companies ... that "arena" of graphic/drawing software ... perhaps attract creative types (?).
I play guitar ... classical, and (attempt to play) some flamenco, but it's just a "private hobby." I like playing in alternate tunings like: E A D a c e
«There is a spectrum, from "clearly desirable behaviour," to "possibly dodgy behavior that still makes some sense," to "clearly undesirable behavior." We try to make the latter into warnings or, better, errors. But stuff that is in the middle category you don’t want to restrict unless there is a clear way to work around it.» Eric Lippert, May 14, 2008
Sorry for the late reply, but I've been out of the office all week! I took piano lessons as a kid, but used to piss off the teacher by memorizing the pieces or just playing them by ear. I played keyboards in a top 40s garage band for a few years in the late '80s...long hair + ripped jeans = chicks! It was a fun time! Keyboards were my first love, but I always had an affinity for bass lines...then I heard Iron Maiden's 'Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner' and everything changed. I learned bass and played in clubs for another 4-5 years until I met a girl...and everything changed.
Nowadays, I have a 300W half stack, a 4-string Fender Prophecy III, and a 5-string Les Paul Standard (cheap model) in my home office. I also recently got a decent 88 key Yamaha digital piano that I MIDI into the PC to control a really cool synthesizer app. I have no desire to play with a group anymore, preferring to jam along with media player. My grandma left me a really nice Baldwin digital piano 10 years ago. I play it when the wife is away...it's in the living room and when she's home, the TV is on.
Favorite bands in no particular order: Iron Maiden (Steve Harris is a god!) Rush Yes Dream Theater Spock's Beard (in the sig) King's X (older stuff)
They stuck this to us yesterday[^]. At least as I'm going to almost certainly be one of the last out of the door as I'll be involved in the transition to Guadalajara at least I'll have until March. Some of my colleagues weren't so lucky and are not at their desks this morning as they are attending to their Garden.
Package is good seeing as it's a US company. one month tax-free for every year service. Plus I think I'll be in the team that ensures everything gets transitioned smoothly and I believe there's an extra bonus based on the successful completion of that.
