I prefer not to sit next to anyone on a train, I would rather stand than take a single seat next to someone. This is because I am well over 6 foot tall and it is bloody uncomfortable trying to sit in a seat on a train with my legs in front of me. If I cannot sit sideways across the two then I will stand. Last time I got a train from London I was sat at a seat with no-one next to me when someone asked if he could sit in the other so I got up and let him have both.
On the bus I aim to sit next to someone who is not overly large or not carrying loads of stuff. This is to minimise physical contact (I believe they don't want me touching them) and to avoid getting hit by someone else's stuff.
I do not care what colour or nationality they are.
I would try to avoid youngish females, worried they'd think I was creepy.
I would try to avoid old people, they are more likely to try talking to me and I'm anti-social. That's why I work in IT.
However, yeah, I think lots of English / British people have a problem with foreigners and with Asians. The reasons for this are many, but I think that being an island nation has something to do with it, it has created a them and us attitude in many. English people don't learn languages well and when they hear people talking in foreign languages they get flustered not knowing what is being said, probably a little paranoid that it is about them too.
Asians in general have been getting lots of negative press for a long time, not just the Islamic thing, but the "coming over here, taking our jobs / living on benefits paid for by my tax money" thing too. The latter applying just as well, if not more so, to Eastern Europeans.
Loads of English people are massive dicks. I am sure that loads of other nationalities are massive dicks too.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.
If you use the tube every day you end up not caring who you sit next to or who you piss off on the train. I am tall and would just plonk myself down if there was a seat free unless one of the neighbors was emitting some sort of odour, especially in the summer. Very happy to be away from that now.

If we had trains in my area I would sit next to any one wouldn't matter to me. We don't have a public transit system in my area. But I do notice this behavior in pretty much every one in my area. Doesn't matter what race they are the people in my area are mistrusting of any outsiders. And trust me it is easy to spot someone that isn't from my area.
I was born closer to the end of the Second World War then the fall of the Berlin Wall.
