Weeks ago they already told us that they were moving through an area that they suspected to once have been a river bed. Why should they make such a big thing of it now? Whatever they think they have found, I can't blame them for checking the results a thousand times before looking stupid afterwards.

I do not think they are going to tell us of evidence of life, we are not going to get a fossilized example of Marciana biota, or a set of Gillevinia straata.
Who knows, but not too many things would justify making such a big deal of.
It's a hideously complicated and lengthy process, that relies on complex mixtures of chemicals coming together in the same place at the same time. and with nothing but geological drift, tiny amounts of external energy (i.e. solar power), the very light winds of a rarified atmosphere, and maybe a trickle or two of water to move the stuff around, the chances that all the right combinations would get to the same place at the same time with the right temperatures and in the right proportions are winning-the-lottery-five-times-in-a-row remote.
Add water to the "soil" that most of Mars appears to be covered with, and nothing much of interest is likely to happen at all, no matter how long you give it.
Earth had oceans of the wet stuff (which was the major factor in chemicals being moved around and new combinations being made) and a very thick, mineral-rich atmosphere, so the chances of "animate matter" springing forth were much more (but still not very) likely.
