It is a sacred object from Ulurus. It is used in courtship rituals by unmarried girls born on the winter solstice and it is said that anyone that who allows sunlight to fall on it will never be able to ripen marrows.

Those who know me may be surprised to hear that I quite enjoy going on to some Facebook pages to engage in exchanges of views with people whom I don't agree with. However, it's killing my limited monthly bandwidth . Just leaving Facebook open, consumes 100 MB an hour. I assume that means there's a ton of AJAX calls running chat, and the 'what's going on' thing on the right. I have installed an ad blocker, but, does anyone know of any Chrome add ins or other ways to make Facebook not update itself dynamically and just show me the page I loaded ? I realise I'll probably lose tagging as a result.
And therein lies the error of your ways, my good man!
I use FB (everyday) to connect with friends and share the odd mildly interesting technical link, but close the browser tab when I'm done. I'm on FB about 5-10 minutes a day max and don't think it makes a dent in my monthly bandwidth allowance.
Well, that's fine, but, if you're using it to enter in to detailed discussion, you will find yourself having it open for long periods just because you're typing, or going back to it to reply ( especially as FB won't send you notification emails if you get a reply from a stranger ). In many ways, the forums there are a bit like web forums in 2002.
I'm trying out FBPurity which is a browser add-on that gets rid of much of the noise on the FB page. Maybe it might reduce the traffic a little? So far it seems to have stopped FB blowing up FF every day.
Both have mobile versions, worth a shot. I know as I use the mobile version on my phone (I loathe needing an app to do everything on a phone), and neither chew up that much bandwidth. I'd be interested in hearing how that turns out.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.
I looked back at my first account Old Timer[^] and noticed I didn't post in the lounge only on articles. CG and Marc were my first contacts here and formed my opinion of the site, needless to say it was a good impression almost 12 years here. [/edit]

I still have one of the two email addresses I had in 99. It's configured to be sucked into my gmail account where all the spam is automatically eaten; but if someone were to send a legit email to it, I should still receive it. (The other one was a school account and was turned off shortly after I graduated - they wanted $$ to keep it alive and it was enough of a spam cesspit that I'd largely abandoned it 2 years prior.)
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius

I joined here on August 24th 2002. I seem to recall lurking for some time before that. Still, that was a quick (almost) 12 years and I'm still addicted. Get all stroppy if I don't get my daily does of insults on CP.
