My MIL has asked me to help her out...
She has a laptop which she cannot log onto.
It starts and at the password prompt, there is this message :

The User Profile Service service failed the logon.<br />
User profile can not be loaded.

I have tried safe mode and no joy.

Any way of getting past the password so that I can rebuild the user details in the registry?

SOLUTION...

Firstly, do not start in normal safe mode, got to Directory Services Restore Mode and restart from there.
This enables the system to start without the password.

I have posted a Tip/Trick Here[^] for a fuller description of the actions.

Does anybody have a password? If someone has a password with admin privileges, one can re-set the user's password. If not -- I used to use some boot utility which resets the passwords, but I don't know where to download it, also it was for XP and Windows 2000, not Vista. I'm not sure it's password, the system could be corrupted. Maybe this is the time to re-build the system from scratch. Is the restoration disks available?
