More generally this is often the other way round.

Probability and statistics laws have generally been found on paper.
In practice though, the calculation and use of stats will more often than not require computers.

In any case probability and statistics are used all over the place in software and sometime in places you would not expect.
One of them would be the SQL query optimizer.

Pretty good point. (Well, the question was quite pointless.) The only problem: I found the article you reference quite empty and pointless. During my work in the Academy, I noticed that some part of printed works written by official "scientists" just pretend to be scientific. This one looks like one of those to me. (I voted 4 for the answer).
