I'd like to be able to copy unencrypted files from a disk to an external storage (whatever kind), and then back. I would like that when copying to external storage, the files transparently get encrypted, and when copying from external storage, they get decrypted. This way, I'll see no change on my machine, but the archived files will remain safe.

I am using Windows 7 and would like a procedure integrated as a special Copy/Paste in the Explorer. No more clicks.

Is there a way to achieve that only using the built-in Windows resources ? Is there a simple utility that enables that ?

Interesting question. I don't have an answer for you, but +5 for this one. I'm guessing that you'd have to hook into the system at a pretty low level to achieve this so I would be very surprised if it were a simple/trivial thing.

1 solution

If you are using NTFS on your 'backup' file system, you just enable encryption on it, and ordinary copy operations in either direction will do the encryption/decryption for you.

Unfortunately, the target storage may not be an NTFS disk. I'd prefer a solution such that encryption/decryption is done locally before/after the transfer.
