I have a C# 2010 web application that was created and tested using cassini the default web server in visual studio.net 2010. I am planning to deploy the web application using the web setup and deployment project template since that is the way the application is currently deployed in production.
I now want to deploy the web application to iis on my workstation. (I want to complete this task since I have never worked with a web project for deployment in the past and i am the only programmer at my company. I basically want to see how this works for production so I will know what to do when I deploy my enhancements to production. )
I know that IIS 7 that is compatible with II6 is installed on my workstation since the network administrator installed IIS for me. He not did run the command to make certain iis communicates with asp.net
Now I have the following questions:
1. Since the network administrator installed IIS for me, does that mean IIS runs as a server on my workstation like it does it production? If not, can you tell me what else I would need need to do and/or else what else I need to learn?
2. Since I have a web setup and deployment project, can you tell me if I need to point the the deployment package to where iis is running? If so, can you tell me what parts of the deployment I need to point to IIS?
3. Can you tell me and/or point me to a reference that will tell me where iis is acutally located at?
4. Once have have the deploy package communicating with IIS, how would I run the deployed web application so that I know it is using IIS as the web server instead of using cassini?

Very first I would like to know here where is you production server.
Are you planning to go for shared hosting server OR dedicated server?
because in share case most of the provider doesn't provide installation through the setup therefore you need to upload the either published OR deployed project on server OR upload all files.
In case of dedicated server you can deploy your application through setup and it's should work as you are doing in local environment.

When I look at the network administrator's notes for supporting the production webiste for this small company, he is supplied with a setup.msi and application.exe files from the programmer that used to work at this company. I am planning to do the same thing. This means he is using a dedicated server.
A few more items:
1. This is a small company. So we are using only one dedicated server. We do not have two share.
2. This webiste uses meta data file since it has not been upgraded from IIS 6 to IIS 7.
Thus there are alot of files that are shared. Do you mean this is the 'upload of all files' from the question you asked earlier?

This is a good starter article on security: Securing ASP.NET Applications [^].
There are plenty of other great articles here: you just need to do a search. Good luck.

First, please look at my funtion here:
It will write an excel file when datareader run.
protected void ExportToExel_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string a = string.Format("{0:MM/dd/yyyy}", dtBeginDate.SelectedDate.Value);
string b = string.Format("{0:MM/dd/yyyy}", dtEndDate.SelectedDate.Value);
SqlDataReader dtReader = VNPTTracking.DataAccess.Report.ReportOnlineVehicle(id, a, b);
HttpContext context = HttpContext.Current;
context.Response.Clear();
context.Response.ContentEncoding = System.Text.Encoding.Unicode; context.Response.BinaryWrite(System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetPreamble());
string[] s = { "Biển số", "Tỉnh/TP", "Khách hàng", "Tài khoản", "Mã thiết bị", "Cảm ứng dầu", "Địa chỉ hiện tại", "Thời điểm nhận tin cuối" };
int n = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < s.Count(); i++)
{
context.Response.Write(s[n] + "\t");
n++;
}
context.Response.Write(Environment.NewLine);
while (dtReader.Read())
{
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(0) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(1) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(2) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(3) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(4) + "\t");
if (Convert.ToInt32(dtReader.GetValue(5)) == 1)
{
context.Response.Write("Có" + "\t");
}
else context.Response.Write("Không" + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(6) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(dtReader.GetValue(7) + "\t");
context.Response.Write(Environment.NewLine);
}
context.Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=Report.xls");
context.Response.ContentType = "application/ms-excel";
context.Response.End();
}
Ok, it work good, but has some problem here. That after it export, excels file like this:
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr311/max_lionhart/excels.jpg
Well, the column can't auto fit & a columns has type like number will be become eg: 3,024515E+13 when it too long.
Any one have solution to fix it? Thank you!

|
|
|

I'm not sure how to fix the column to auto fit, but you can format the data before writing it to Excel to fix the issue with the number showing in scientific notation. Here[^]is an article that may help.

I work for a small company where a C# web form 2010 application was written. My job is to make enhancements to the application since I have limited C# web experience.
For now I just want to deploy the production code to my workstation and run the website on my workstation using IIS 7 that is compatible with IIS6.
When I look at the deployment project file in this application, I see debug and release folders that contain the setup.exe and application.msi files.
However from the ways I have been trying to deploy the application, I do not the setup.exe and application.msi files.
I have probably been using the web deploy item that comes with Visual studio.net 2010 professional edition. I also wanted to mention, the network administrator does not have 'web deploy' installed on the production server.
Thus can you tell me and/or point me to a reference where I can setup a deployment project the way the contract shop does?

Do you have the source code? Have you tried just opening the source code in Visual Studio?

Since I am new to working with IIS and communicates with a C# web form 2010 web application, I have a few questions to ask about how to test the web application with IIS. The IIS I need to work with is IIS 7 that needs to be compatible with IIS6. (This is due to the web application I am working uses meta data files.) Of the ways to work with IIS , I do not think I want to use IIS Express as the web server since IIS EXpress is version IIS 7.5 and above and I want to use IIS 6.
Of the options I am listing below, I would like to know what the better option is and how to accomplish the tasks on my own workstation:
1. I would will use Cassini to test the web application. I will then deploy the web application to IIS on my own workstation and test the web application. How can I accomplish those tests separately? (Note: the network administrator at my small company has already installed IIS for me. (Note: I have not setup IIS to communicate with the web application yet.)
2. I would use IIS as the test web server on my workstation.
Thus can you tell me and/or show me references on how to accomplish these goals?

You do not need to place your question in <pre> tags. That is only for code snippets. Please edit your question to remove the unnecessary formatting and make it easier to read.

This is happening a lot recently. I think it may be a CP problem and have reported it to Chris.

You don't need to test using Cassini and then test again using IIS on the same machine, do you? What are you trying to accomplish?
