On the one hand, there’s an understandable desire to standardize — a set of approved languages can help reign in maintenance costs and long-term viability. But equally, many of us recognize the benefits of using whichever language the developer feels allows them to express themselves most eloquently. 42?
Or rather I guess 43 as 42 is the right number?

I have seen time after time developers introduce frameworks and languages that they like and then impose on others with huge change and cost by re-writing perfectly maintainable systems because it was not in their currently favourite language.

There's no such thing as "too many languages".
Pretty much EVERY language ever developed fills a specific perceived need. When you get right down to it, it all results in binary code. You're pretty much restricted to using the language(s) required to do the job. Period. End of discussion.
