...if he stays quiet, i might let him out.
Trying something a bit different. Ever since David first implemented it, we've used an iframe for hosting the rich text editor. Mostly because up until FF3, that was the only way to do it: you could make a document editable, but not individual parts of a document (the way you could in IE using the contenteditable attribute). This had one rather nice side-effect: iframe s maintain their own selection object, so you could have text selected in the outer document (say, something you wanted to quote) and a different selection in the editor document (the place you want the quotation to be inserted).
Unfortunately, there were a couple of rather nasty downsides: setting up an iframe is slow, and putting it into editing mode is more than a little fragile. With some difficulty, the second issue can be worked around, but the speed is still terrible.
So I ripped out the iframe and hacked in a contenteditable div. So far, it seems faster. The editor pops open with barely a delay, rendering appears to be able to keep up with my frenetic typing, and i can even add non-editable elements into the mix (right now, just smileys...).
But before i wire this in too deep, I'd like to know how it works for others. First and foremost: is anyone still using < FF3? Second, are there any odd side-effects that i haven't noticed yet? Is it significantly slower in any common scenarios? And finally, is anyone actually reading this?
As always, thanks for your help and feedback.

I'm using FF 2 and have it set up Just The Way I Like It, and I've got no reason to switch to 3.

Did you end up dropping FF2 support? I haven't gotten any CPHog love in a few days.

Running FF2 is like running IE5.5...? :P

Hmm... Haven't tested on it recently, but haven't really made any changes either. Are you using the release or the trunk build?

I honestly don't remember, how can I tell? (This FF install is really old, so I don't remember all the details of how I set stuff up)

Well, I dove right in (meaning: didn't back anything up) and installed FF 3.5, updated GM and other extensions just to be safe, and CPhog looks to be mostly working. I don't see the row of Bobs at the top, or the Bob in the bottom corner, but the editor does work (with a few positioning and keyboard glitches).

I'm testing some changes to the editor template, so if you're using the trunk version of CPhog things might look... a little weird.

When I click the smiley button, I don't get the list of emoticons. A progress bar flashes in the FF status bar for a fraction of a second, like it's trying to load something, but the list never appears.

Thanks, Mike - i guess i've memorized all the smileys i use! I'll take a look at this, it appears to happen with FF3 as well.

Should be working now (hard refresh if it doesn't kick in by itself).

Where's the trunk one that has the hidden icons?

Can you add an icon to see what type of link we're clicking: audio, video, etc.?

If you're using FF2 there's TargetAlert that will do that. Last I checked, it didn't work in FF3.

Yeah, I used it in FF2, but miss it in FF3.

So what's happening with CPHog?

Nothing. I've been slammed with work, and David got a job (and, possibly, a real hobby ).
I'll probably open things up again once Life tapers off a bit. December generally does that to me...

A job is something to get you out of the house. Is something wrong with CPHog and FF3? My signatures don't seem to get saved.

Too lazy and scared to disable CPHog since my work FF no longer supports it, but if you edit a CPHog message without it, and vice-versa, does it see it as a CPHog message still, and vice-versa?

CPhog messages are tagged with a hidden DIV appended to the message. If you post a message using CPhog and then edit it without CPhog, the tag will persist... unless you edit it out.

What do you want it changed to? I can add a "@media tv { PRE { ... } }" entry in the main CSS file if you want.

I think just making it bold would make a world of a difference.
But I am unsure how it will work. Do I have to specify something within my browser (FF3) to make it use the tv rules rather than the ordinary rules?
