Block the 'background-image' CSS property? That is how it's done (from what I can see).

I think CP may have switched to a new ad-provider-source, which may be being blocked by my use of the humongous "Hosts" file which is maintained, and updated, by MVPS.org [^].
But, the ads are blocked so quickly I can't inspect them using Google's dev-tools to see what their source is, and I certainly would like to not block ads on CP, as a way to support the site. I am absolutely certain there is no reference to any variation on the CodeProject domain in the MVPS hosts file, because I do a search on the file every time I update it, to make sure it is not blocked.
I'm just hoping you haven't started using that mega-generator of ads, on so many sites: ad.doubleclick.net: the MVPS Hosts file blocks at least eighty, or more, various "incarnations" of that domain.
Uh-oh: I just examined the links to sponsors in the Daily newsletter: while the links are nominally to: http://apps.developermedia.com: clicking on them leads to, yep, a doubleclick.net page which won't load, because its blocked in the Hosts file: like this one "http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;269273183;67721356;r?https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/481543766."
mmm ... what to do: how to support CP, and allow its ads, while blocking doubleclick ads on other sites ?
thanks, Bill

Bill, since I also use the hosts file you mention, I just wanted to tell you what I have learned today, well yesterday/Monday. I don't know if they have changed provider or simply activated a timeout message, but they do indeed link to ad.doubleclick.net for the ads.
Like you I want to do my part to support the site, but I don't want to open up for ads from a slew of other sites, so I commented out ad.doubleclick.net in the hosts file and re-enabled the AdBlocker plugin in my IE and set it up to not filter on CodeProject. I had stopped using AdBlocker because the hosts file worked better for me.
According to OriginalGriff, AdBlockerPlus works quite well, but it is not available for IE, so I did not pursue that option yet.

Hi Soren,
... edit ...
I forgot to mention that I already used the AdBlockPlus for Chrome UI to enter codeproject.com in the list of "whitelisted" sites: that had no effect on the ads being blocked
...
A very timely response (voted up): I have just been examining the structure of the "exceptionrules" file for AdBlock Plus, in Chrome, which is the browser I use now [^], studying the format of that file's entries that allow a specific site's ads.
The AdBlock Plus UI accessed within Chrome/Extensions/AdBlockPlus does not seem to offer any easy way to add to the "permitted exceptions" list, when that feature is enabled, and I do have it enabled.
Here's an example of an entry in that file that, evidently, enables acceptance of doubleclick.net ads for rhymes.net:
||rhymes.net/px.gif?ch=2&rn=*
@@||googleads.g.doubleclick.net/aclk^$subdocument,domain=rhymes.net
@@||googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/*^$subdocument,domain=rhymes.net
@@||pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/*^$script,domain=rhymes.net
@@||googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk^$subdocument,domain=rhymes.net
rhymes.net#@#.adunit-middle
rhymes.net#@#.adunit
rhymes.net#@#.ads-label
rhymes.net#@##google_ads_frame1
And, scrutiny of that file makes it obvious that a line that starts with an exclamation point is a comment; the || double-vertical-bar is the start of an entry definition followed by a kind of unique id for the site, and the rest of the structure seems obvious in what it is doing.
So, I guess I will have to do some study of the structure of the specific CP links to see if I can create the properly formatted exceptions entry file, and then figure out a way to get Chrome to load that modified file. I'm hoping I can achieve this without removing the many variations in the MVPS Hosts file that block doubleclick.net ads !
But, I haven't gone to the AdBlockPlus Site yet, to see what they say about creating an exception.
I'll see if I can find any message on CP from OriginalGriff about his solution for AdBlocker in IE, but, I assume, that AdBlockerPlus is a different company, and an AdBlocker solution for IE may not give me any clues for a solution for AdBlockerPlus in Chrome.
thanks again, Bill

I am sure there is a more user friendly way of doing this. When I use AdBlock in IE, there is an icon in the status bar at the bottom. Right-clicking on that brings up a popup menu with a bunch of things related to the plugin, including an "Ad Blocker" menu entry that leads to a submenu where I can select "Don't Filter This Site".
It's actually simpler than it sounds, but I can't seem to find a screenshot online.

Also, I don't know if we are discouraged from linking to RA (if so, this post can easily be deleted), but you can have a look at this[^].

We've been using DART as our backend provider for over a year now. Before that we used AdSignia, Atlas and others. We manage all our own ads and only use DART (DoubleClick) to do the actual ad serving.
The choice as to what you do is, as always, entirely up to you. We just want our readers to be aware that they are, in fact, making a choice, and that their choice does have a tangible affect.

Hi Chris,
I interpret your response as a kind of diplomatic way of saying you can't really provide specific instructions for how to enable DART served ads only for CodeProject, perhaps because of your contractual agreement with DART.
My only concern is how to make sure that CP's ads are allowed to appear, while still enjoying the massive "browsing static reduction" provided by the enhanced MVPS Hosts File !
It is of interest, technically, to me how CP server-side is able to detect the ads not being "loaded;" but, I'd guess it would not be appropriate for me to ask about that, either
It may (or may not) please you to know that, so far: CP is the only site where I have seen notification of Hosts file blocked-ads not being displayed. I can think of a few other sites, only a few, for which I'd make an effort to make sure their placed-ads were not blocked

I wish it were that nefarious. I also wish I lived in a hollowed out volcano and sat in a large black leather chair with a white, long haired cat on my lap.
I actually don't know how to enable DART ads only for CodeProject. If I did I'd shout it from the rooftop.

We put a lot of effort into ensuring our ads are sensible. AdOps no longer even ask me if an ad is appropriate or not - if they feel the need to ask, they know the answer will be "no". If this means we're offending less people than others do then I'm happy.

The banner says CP tries hard to ensure that ads aren't annoying. I CP but I find this ad very annoying only because "advertising" is misspelled "adveritsing".

It seems whatever logic you added is a little trigger happy. I will occasionally get the message when I am browsing from my phone and I don't have anything to block ads on that.
On my computer I have also seen ads show up, then get replaced by the message after a few seconds.

I'm seeing this, too, Chris. No ad blockers on, but sometimes the ad comes up, sometimes I see the reminder. I've even seen an ad start to render, but is replaced by the reminder before it finishes.
FWIW, the site is occasionally slow to load for me tonight, so maybe there's some added latency messing up the timings.
