Sometime in 1985, I took my young son in with me while I did some work on a Dec_System-20. He happily played beside me by stacking some orange cones that were put out when the floor was wet, or so I thought. The next day I found he had turned off a disk drive on a Vax system. At that age, I couldn't have resisted the lighted button he pushed. Fortunately, the system was not critical. I think that message was posted somewhere, but then he couldn't read yet so it didn't matter.

Original Post: Forum Message Re: I'm about 85% there.[^]
Self realization: if I was annoyed this much, why would I want to put up with it at all?
For those of you who may wonder (maybe there's one?), here's what comes of checking the don't send anything option (which is, interestingly, pre-checked). It begs a question I always have with email based solicitation: they can put you on a mailing list immediately but it takes several day to get off of it. It's not like the email's already in an envelope or something. Aside from hoping there will be a change of heart if you get further annoyed, why is this so?

I think it's more a "cover their ass" situation, in case their processing service is already in the middle of building a mail campaign, or even part way through sending one.
For example, you might already be on the mailing list for an email that is getting sent out in the morning and it isn't feasible to re-build that every time somebody unsubscribes.

They probably use an external service like Constant Contact or Mailchimp.

Probably not (they can afford their own) - but even if so, how long does it take to update the mail contractor's database? They certainly get you into it pretty damn quickly !
Sometimes credit card companies would send some pseudo-checks in the envelope with the bill. I call and demand they never do it again as I will accept neither the hassle nor liability if it the mail is stolen and the checks are used. They tell me it may take weeks. I inform the that as of "this current communication" I am informing them that I take no responsibility or liability for the checks if they are used - under absolutely any circumstances whatsoever, without any exception, without recourse on their part or on their behalf. Once I used that technique then I never see them again. They just need to be motivated.

Marking an item in a database of emails as "unsubscribe" shouldn't take a few days. It should, in fact, take seconds (at most) and if the email hasn't already been sent out it should be killed.
Inhouse we have various lists of employees - and a view that only shows current active employees. As soon as they are non-current (or current) all lists immediately reflect their new state.
I mean really - we do live in the computer age.

CYA for if a message sent before the unsubscribe is temporarily stuck in the aether, and will successfully be retried and delivered tomorrow.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Emyn Muil - Halls of the Fallen[^]
Hell yeah! The (musical) year 2020 can't get any better, with so many awesome new album releases!
This time, it's Emyn Muil, one of my favorite bands, who will release a new album.
Needless to say I listened to this song and pre-ordered the new 8-panel Digipak Limited Collectors Edition which is due next month.
They are basically a (good) clone of the genre defining band Summoning, epic black metal inspired completely by Tolkien (instead of satanism, hate, war, etc.).
The band name is named after the rocky maze where Sam and Frodo team up with Gollum.
Halls of the Fallen is probably about Moria or something.
I couldn't find much about the album title, Afar Angathfark, except that it may be an Orcish oath meaning "By the forge of my soul!"
Can't wait for the full album next month, but until that time this awesome song will suffice

My headphones did not do this justice. I listened to the Elenion Ancalima album afterwards. The horn near the quarter mark of Ar-Pharazôn gave me chills.
I'll have to explore this more over the weekend with a proper sound system.
