I had a note about office upgrade show up last week. Clicked "don't remind me" or something and it hasn't shown up again. Is that the "ads" people are upset with?

Could be. I have no idea what people are crapping themselves about anyways.

I believe there is a setting to turn it on/off.
I don't have the tabletted style, so I'm fine without it.

There was a setting. It's changed so you can only choose relevant or irrelevant ads
Now is it bad enough that you let somebody else kick your butts without you trying to do it to each other? Now if we're all talking about the same man, and I think we are... it appears he's got a rather growing collection of our bikes.

My personal approach to this was throwing the tiles out from the start menu altogether.
Either I want a file and use [Windows] + [E] and browse to it.
Or I want to start a program and hit [Windows] and start typing, e.g. 'Visual' and then hit [Enter].
No need for a start menu, apart from the search. For me at least.

The search box is where I've seen "suggested apps". Previous versions of Windows 10 allowed me to hide them, but I think that option has gone in this latest version.

Could be - Seems like I completely overlooked that until today.

I thought they put the ads in the play-school block things,
so few (normal users) would see them.

I normally see them when I hit the Windows key and start typing the name of the app I want to use - there are usually suggested apps. Previously you could turn them off, not but it looks like you can't any more.
I think once the Creator Update is pushed out to everyone, you'll see what I mean.

I've personally seen this one a few weeks ago, on a machine installed clean from an MSDN ISO. I don't know what you would call if it not an ad.
The "suggested" items that show up in the start menu are ads also. Not to mention the preloaded Candy Crush and Facebook tiles. And the "Get Office 365" nag.
I used to prefer installing Windows from MSDN ISOs rather than sticking with the preloaded OEM versions because of all the trialware you had to manually get rid of - pretty soon they'll be just as bad.

I have several popups per day trying to convince me on... i.e. how good the Office 365 is
Note that I have not formated yet... OEM Laptop came with some preinstalled software (trial versions) that I have never started or activated but they won't stop saying how cool that feature or how easy is to activate or whatever...
I know... a format and a clean install will take it away, but people without enough confidence to do it has only two options... get pissed off by the damm annoying and often popups or pay and activate with the hope they will let him in peace.

Not so on Windows 10 Creator Update.

Microsoft published a rather lengthy and technical description of the nature of the data when it's configured to only send basic data. I've read it; have you? And based on that, I'm not terribly concerned about Microsoft trying to build a user profile based on that information and selling it to third parties.
And I say that despite the built-in ads.

I think you're missing the point. When I select "off" I expect it to be "off", not to be "only on a little bit"..
Imagine if everything worked this way..

So I've had this damn rabbit tied down on top of a few regular, a few dyed, and a few Cadbury Chocolate eggs for almost a week, now. How long will it take for something to happen?
