Every year, the week leading up to koning(in)sdag (this Wednesday) has the worst weather we see all year, then on koning(in)sdag itself is the best, most beautiful weather we get all year.

Right now, outside, there's thunder, lightning, and three quarters of an inch of Hail! Solid balls of ice, 6-8mm in diameter! We don't get weather this bad in the depths of Winter.

Koningin = queen
Dag = day.
They had a queen, for the first years I was here, but there's a king, now (who's married to the descendant of one of the nazis that fled to South America, after WWII).

Oh, it's a great celebration day.
The highlight is when everyone takes all the rubbish out of their houses, and lays it on a blanket on the street, to sell.
So it's the day when all the useless and unwanted cr@p in the country changes hands -- which is probably why it's named after the king (or queen).
I just stay home and let 'em get on with it.
