What the Hell is wrong with these people I keep reading about in the paper who want to go and live on Mars? I've been to the top of Tenerife which is probably similar and there's nothing there - just rocks and thin air. It was rubbish!

There are very few things left that give the recognition of Columbus or Magellan, didn't you ever want to be the first person to do something people would recognize for the rest of recorded time?

Ahem:
Though it has become irrevocably associated with the series and movies, the exact phrase was never actually spoken in any Star Trek television episode or film.

All true, neither is there any trees, oceans, beer, pizza or hookers. The latency for online gaming would be appalling. It's a slightly one-sided angle you're arguing here!

It seems so distant and yet so close. 17 light hours away, that's a long way away but at the same time rather pitiful on universal scale.
I've got a DVD by Stephen Hawking, and I will admit to only half paying attention watching it but if I recall correctly he reckons you can get to the other side of the universe in 80 years, if you're going really bloody fast, nearly light fast. But it'd be a whole lot longer on earth.

Amazing achievement, I wonder if years from now space travelers will pass it and the captain will say; If you look out the right post hole you will see Voyager I...

|

It doesn't seem that far - it would only take a jet 2395 years[^] to travel the same distance.
And it will only take Voyager 40,000 years to reach the nearest star.
To quote a character from a book I was reading the other day, "Space is too f***ing big!"
