There's a fresh Pi[^] available to celebrate the Pi day.

Inspired by the return of MQOTD, the death of David Ogden Stiers and THIS PICTURE[^] that just showed up on my Farcebook timeline (Completely SFW, but not for your sense of fashion):
MASH is easily my favourite tv-sitcom EVER. I need to stock up on popcorn and start binge-watching the entire 11 seasons (AGAIN)!
If ever there was a show that needed reviving, that's it!
But it made me start thinking: Alan Alda is too old, so who would they cast as Hawkeye now? I have one actor in mind I think would make one hell of a Hawkeye, but I'd be interested in hearing your ideas.
And how about the rest of them?
Initial cast:
Hawkeye Pierce
Trapper John McIntyre
Frank Burns
Henry Blake
Hotlips Houlihan
Radar O'Reilly
Father Francis Mulcahy
Final cast:
Hawkeye Pierce
B.J. Hunnicut
Charles Emerson Whinchester
Sherman T. Potter
Hotlips Houlihan
Maxwell Klinger
Father Francis Mulcahy
Last thing: Who's your favourite non-resident character? Mine is definitely the stark raving Colonel Flagg, and for some reason, I'd really like to see Bruce Willis in that role.

Nah ... bring back Soap[^]
Now, that was a sitcom!
MASH was damn good - but just calling it a sitcom is selling it too cheap, I'd say.
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

So your Hawkeye candidate is?

Don't think I have one really - I'm not sure a reboot (or worse, a remake) would work. MASH was a product of its time, the Vietnam War was still very fresh in the mind. It worked because it was close enough in time to be "real" and the Korean War was far enough in time to have jokes made about it.
Now? The world is different, and I think it would get given a "modern update" or "modern interpretation" which would ruin it. Think about it: how much of what went on would be PC these days?

lol millennial liberals are getting triggered by re-runs of Friends, how do you think they'd react to MASH? They'd claim it's transphobic, full of men abusing their power to sexually harass women...the complaints would be endless. Poor sensitive souls!

In that case, I'd say: Let's force them to watch the entire 11 seasons of Married with Children (another favourite of course)!

I'm not sure they would survive the first episode let alone the whole series.

Can we save the "anyone who doesn't want to arm a toddler is a snowflake" schtick for The Soapbox, please?
|
|
|
|

I didn't say that, but I did say anyone triggered by Friends is a snowflake. Because they are. Sorry if stating facts offends you, but this isn't a university safe space, or twitter.

You weren't offending me in the slightest, I just think your comment would have been more at home on The Soapbox.
I'm sorry if my having an opinion offends you.

The thread isn't on the soapbox so I had to make it here. Not sure where you got the impression I was offended by anything, seems like another straw-man argument.

Come now lads - play nice. And answer my question(s)!

I think the answer is a simple "DON'T DO IT" - they were all so good that they absolutely own the parts. However good the replacements, we'd be pining for the original cast.

I love that show, but I wouldn't like to see it rebooted.
As it would lose too much of it's charm in todays current TV climate

I would. But even if you don't there's no harm in a small, fun thought experiment, I'm sure

You don't need to sort dates; they already come in order.
