In October I started a thread about what kind of free 3D modeling software to use and I decided to give SketchUp Maker a try. Now I finally found out that one feature that I really need is only available in the Pro version (which is ~500€) and I'm not going to spend that kind of money especially when all I need additionally to the free stuff is to add/subtract 3D shapes.
Looked around some more and now found AutoDesk 123D Designer which seems to have all I need. I'm installing it now and will give it a spin.
Anybody else here have some experience with that tool?
Cheers!

I don't know much about AutoDesk, but what does SketchUp have that Blender[^] doesn't? It's come a long way over the years.

I did have a look at that one today too, but that beast is absolute overkill.
And out of the box I couldn't even figure out how to do a very simple 3D drawing.
It sure does have a lot of functions and usage scenarios, but neither do I want to animate, build a game
etc., all I want to do is 3D models of gadgets, jigs and furniture I'm building in my shop.
Well, that said Autodesk 123D Designer seems to have what I need and it's free.
I'll report on my success as soon as I looked into it a little deeper.
Cheers!

I could be wrong but I thought Marc Clifton had some experience with 3d modeling software. 123D, I do not know.

erm,
You mean "Design"?
Sorry this is not a constructive comment. Awfully philosphical a statement for a Monday morning but here goes ... have you tried Googling "tutorials for 123D Design"?
And what JF said ... (only in caps)

I don't think it is available anymore - and certainly isn't being developed - but you could take a quick google for trueSpace[^]
Wierd interface, but I found it really simple to use once you got used to that - and powerful too (like re-time editing in a 3d world with rendering and gravity and collision detection turned on)
Unfortunately another one that MS bought and chucked away

This is crazy,
I can't believe I didn't think to come up with this yesterday:
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/[^]
There's a primative template menu group that will fabricate various one-offs which you can then extend into the realm of 3D-space willy-nilly, ad infinitum, uzw ...
Yes? No? Maybe?

I was pretty set on publishing my (so slow) developing Menu and Ribbon hybrid class (aptly named MenuRibbon) for WPF on CodePlex!
Tonight I tried to create the repo on CodePlex and it kept telling me that HG was not recommended, did I want to try Git per chance?
Unfortunately TortoiseGit doesn't work (out of the box)!
So I was googling for a git client, downloaded "GitHub for Windows" a couple of click later, behold, my MenuRibbon is on GitHub!

Geez, that was too eazy!
Go on, fork like crazy like I know you want to do!

I asked the missus: "How about tonight then?", but she not so politely replied that I go and fork myself!

Hmm. I have no problems with TortoiseGit however I use that mostly on GitHub.

Thanks!
Yeah it requires msysgit to work or something... I found GitHub for Windows before I found msysgit!

We've been using Git at work for a few years, and I have only used the commandline tools.
In July I put a project[^] on GitHub and discovered GitHub for Windows.
Yeah! I really like it. It's simple, takes care of most tasks.
I've only had to drop back to the console once to take care of some conflicts when merging a branch.
The integrated support into Visual Studio 2013 is nice as well.

Oh? mm.. they will be coming! I committed that yesterday night just before bed, didn't expect to go that far, but click, click and done!

We use Source Tree at work-related better than the default client. Also makes dropping on to the command line easy.

I'm impressed. I've never been able to get that pile of crap to work. Every year, during a moment where get in touch with my past life as a self-flagellating monk, I try it, and very year, it doesn't work. Quite frankly, I think the last time, I couldn't even figure out how to get past the first screen to open an existing project, the UI sucks that bad.
Use use an older version of SmartGit/Hg[^] (why bother updating what works), and free for non-commercial use.

Have you tried the last version?
I am secretly pleased I could do something you couldn't!
But I am even more surprised!

Haha!
I was just putting my thoughts in the README as I went along.... I was expecting to put it there!
Must update the README now!

Ah! This is better because.... it leads me back to where I am. Hours of potential entertainment for the whole family!
I would love to see... you know, concept, screenshots, functionality 'n' stuff.

It certainly will be good to put some screenshot and blah blah blah....
But this is like a v0.4, the whole keyboard handling is horrible at the moment, trying to fix that!
I guess after that perhaps I should take some screen shot, learn how to make a fancy start page and write a nicer description!
Well if I want to create the expected community frenzy that I was hoping for, of course!
