I've done a bit of work writing software for rugged handhelds with scanners. Motorola Symbol is probably the market leader and gives the biggest variety of keyboards, screens and accessories (http://www.motorolasolutions.com/US-EN/Business+Product+and+Services/Mobile+Computers/Handheld+Computers[^].)

Two other devices I really liked were the Honeywell Dolphin (which they got when they purchased Handheld Products) and Panasonic's JT-H300[^] which was a real pleasure to work with.

Motorola makes a bunch of these, they are all pretty good from what I remember.

Anyway, I would question why you would spend $2K for one of these, when you can get a smartphone that does all of that for a lot less money, or something like an ipod touch.

Some of the Motorola families were suggested by me. I get feeling that the Smartphone/tablet option is not preferred as these might get 'lost' or 'walk' with people
