Hmm. Reminds me of a science fiction story I read a long time ago. A ship's surgeon is the only survivor of a crash on a planet. His crewmates' bodies are destroyed in the crash, and the ship's recycling systems are severely damaged. He has adequate air and water, but only a small amount of food, which is soon gone.
Fortunately most of the equipment and supplies in the medical bay have survived.
When he is finally rescued after many months, the rescue team finds him in the med bay on the operating table. Both of his legs and his right arm are gone, and he is in the process of removing two of the fingers on his left hand...
