I have to agree, it crossed my mind that the OP seemed to just be looking for someone to say "yeah, you have no chance... just give up now".

Indeed. The more of his responses I read, the more it sounds like he's already set his mind and is fully expecting failure, and anyone trying to talk him out of it is "wrong". That's downright sad.

that's not what I'm saying, but I will say this. I appreciate you guys telling me that I have a chance and everything, but lets be honest. I can have the most stellar personality out there and that best grades i can have while I'm in college. At the end of the day I still believe no one isn't gonna hire me. Am I looking to get a job at a place like Google or work for the CIA? No. I really honestly think a little mini startup isn't even gonna look at me simply because regardless of what anyone says conviction no conviction expunged or no expungement it'll all boils down to the fact that I have a record point blank period. I know you all aren't gonna pay attention to that and wanna come up with your own half assed responses, but thats all i gotta say

You make a claim no one is paying attention, but you're missing a key component to many of the "half-assed" responses.
You don't have a record.
You don't have anything to disclose regarding an expungement.
No one will be any wiser about whatever "record" you (do not) have, unless you tell them.
What will hold you back is a poor attitude.
At this point, it's starting to feel like you're trolling. However, should this all be genuine and you want to play in this field, quit making excuses and go make an effort.

I've been told different from other people regarding this statement.

you can think whatever you wanna think. I just came here looking for an answer about freelancing because its true no one isnt gonna hire me whether i have a good attitude or not. All there gonna care about is my record which to me still exist because it does. so no I don't think you understand what im trying to say or what my situation is and just gonna believe that some employers is gonna care about some expunged arrest? Excuse my language but thats straight up bs?.

It's apparent that you only read and digest what you want to.
You're not adding any new information to your responses; merely repeating the same, ignoring what we (who work/manage/hire in this field) are telling you.
Your mind is made up on your worth, and that's unfortunate. Some people on the internet aren't going to convince you otherwise. You'll be your own limiting factor, not your expunged record.
In any case, I wish you luck!

To me this reeks of "pre-emptively finding excuses for his future failures", and those excuses have nothing to do with reality. He's looking to blame the unfairness of society at large when all he needs to find the source of his problems is to look into a mirror.
There's a lot more I could say on this topic, but I'll still give him the benefit of doubt. But I have a feeling this all too stereotypical. I'm leaving it at that.

What record?? You don't have one!
Do you have other criminal records that you are not telling us about?
You said you wasn't even convicted. If all that happened was you were arrested, that means nothing. Anybody could get arresting just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, doesn't mean they did anything wrong.
From what you have told us, you haven't even committed a crime. So please explain, what are you even worried about? because it seems like you might be bending the truth a little bit here.
And if you are getting conflicted advice from another source, I strongly suggest you never pay attention to that source again.
If you really want to convince yourself, go find a criminal lawyer and pay them to tell you the exact same things.

No I don't have any other charges, but idk why you're even telling me this when you're in the UK and not the US. Which means the legal system is different between the two.

i went to r/legaladvice from reddit as well as freecodecamp and i've been told otherwise. not sure who to believe

I have never been to the US, but I still seem to know more about your own laws than you do. The internet is worldwide, I don't need to travel to learn.

Why believe anyone? Go out and actually do something about it - apply for some jobs. You will find out quickly enough who was telling the truth and who wasn't.
Anyway, I agree with Kris, you are definitely trolling. Sad thing is, it doesn't bother any of us - we enjoy the conversations/arguments just as much as you do.

go out and apply and then immediately get shot down as soon as the arrest shows up cause no one is gonna give me a chance now? And you can believe i'm trolling all you want I have no reason to come here and lie as I believe this 100%. as I said it was a wrong thing coming here getting "help"/advice.

Why would the arrest show up?
Also, so what if it does? You aren't going to be any worse off than you are now... but maybe you could be better off. Take a chance.

ok and then im suppose to just settle with having a dead end job for the rest of my life?

The same dead-end job you will have if you don't bother trying.
If a company performs background checks on their employees, they will do that regardless of you being full-time or a freelancer. Freelancing is not a way to avoid background checks. Therefore, you have to accept you will be background checked. So either take a chance, or stick with your dead-end job. Your life. Your choice.

so then that just goes back to what I've been saying earlier. I have no chance now whatsoever now

You have the same chance as everybody else.
You know, Bill Gates was arrested when he was 19... some dead-end job that got him stuck in hey.

ok for starters bill gates was born into money so thats an irrelevant argument. and so basically now what you're saying is that even though i dont have a conviction and the arrest got expunged then being at a dead end job is all i can have although you say i have a chance just like anyone else which i dont but thanks for that mediocre response

I have changed my mind... I don't think you have a chance anymore. Not because of your non-existent record, but because you lack any sort of attributes required to be a good developer (reading being one of them).
Enjoy your dead-end job

so in the other posts you said it can still show up, but now you're saying that the record is non existent?

I haven't once said it can still show up. Go find where I said that...

maybe you didnt say it but as I recall you did say just apply and find out which indicates to me that it's gonna show up regardless. so once again my life is pretty much over.

Well, you seem to know best, so whatever you say...
Yeah, that's exactly what that means...
Since you can never be sure effort leads to reward, sitting back full of excuses is the only way to avoid the potential failure.

The more from this thread I read, the more I get this feeling of deja vu. I can't remember where it was, it might even have been here on CP, but I was in a discussion forum--years ago--and someone showed up with the same sort of story and was shooting everything down because of some supposed criminal record he didn't even have, and he kept going back to that and trying to convince others he was wasting his time trying anything at all.
It was rather infuriating to try to reason with him. I don't know how social workers deal with people who don't want to help themselves.
And mentioning he got advice from Reddit...c'mon, this is such a tired old meme it's not even funny.

Deja vu? But...but, you don't understand! This person's story is so much more different than the other person!
