Even a bit more, since official membership was on valentine's day in 2002 - but I have been there from almost the beginning on, before TheTerribleDatabaseCatastrophee, so you can probably add two years to this. (here the screenshot : CP in 2000[^]
I am bit nostalgic of the early days, where I could help a lot of fellow programmers in the C++ forum with Microsoft Foundation Classes, and also helped shaping this website piece after piece. I can still remember the day I joined the community - I had a question about Embedded Visual Studio, in times where embedded code for automotive in C++ was .. stuttering, I was sitting near my buddy who was doing an internship with me, in the office of one of the big automotive company (the one with a star) developing diagnostics systems for embedded ECUs, and he told me "Hey, I found a cool website, maybe you can ask your question there". From there on, the addiction began.  Got to know a lot of very, very nice and talented people all the way, and still very happy to be in the community. Career got me away from new technologies, C#, web stuff and so, but still enjoy going through Q&A to see what I could have known

I joined late in 2003, so some way to go yet. But I do recall getting help from some great articles back in the day when I had a proper job.

Basic biology; don't push your luck then. That's not a coffee anymore.
Simpeler, it is the dose that determines toxicity. I smoke for example; most of the toxins burn. But if I soaked one of those cigarettes in water and drank it, I'd die (over some hours, retching and pain).

There was some regulatory action, but I'm not at all confident in its effectiveness.

I've said it earlier this week and I'll say it again...
These people are fearing for their lives, their loved ones, their homes and their country.
If you're more concerned with "politics in the Lounge" than the well-being of your fellow CP'ians, you lack empathy.
There's little we can do, but at least 0x01AA is asking these members how they are doing and letting them know he's thinking about them.
It may just be what keeps these people going, because they know the world is cheering for them (well, except for you and some other members apparently, because how dare they get political in the Lounge).
Not everything is about politics, sometimes it's just about caring for your fellow human beings and not wanting them to die.
I've said this twice now this week, I guess programmers really are a bunch of anti-social cynics

Putin made them targets and no one else, but this discussion is a political one so let's keep it at that.

Times have changed, people have changed, society has changed.
The USA invading Iraq now would probably cause the same kind of reaction, but I guess we won't know until something like that happens again.
Maybe it's because (social) media is dominated by western people and Ukraine is a western country while Iraq isn't.
Whatever the case, it's no reason to not support our Ukrainian members right now.
Especially when one posts about his situation in person.
To me, the only acceptable reaction to any CP member posting "I might die any moment now, but I just wanted to let you know I'm still alive." is a reaction of support: "stay strong", "we're thinking about you", "let's hope it'll stop soon" or even "thoughts and prayers".
Going out of your way to tell them their misery somehow bothers you is not an acceptable reaction.

Speaking for myself only here, I don't need to be reminded 20 times a day, every day, how sad the situation is with Ukraine; it's too much.
I have people on my team who are from the Ukraine, and I have been dealing with them personally during these difficult times for them. So don't preach to me about empathy.
Get off your high horse, and stop preaching your holier than thou crap.
