I thought I would throw this out to fellow CPians.
My home office is small, and I need a server machine to test some development
ideas. Bleeding edge cpu is not important, nor is graphics, but decent dual hard
drives are.
Being that the office is small, I need a quiet system as reasonable possible.
Any suggestions for equipment?

Does anyone know if there is software access to the wireless power switch you often see on notebook PC's nowadays? I've been asked to see if there is a way to "simulate" the switch function (turn off the wireless) through a program. I have some code that disables the NIC but he wants to actually shut the power off to the xmters as well if it can be done.
He said that his notebook has a key combination that does the power on/off rather than a slider or toggle switch. Is this done through the bios? How would that work and would I be able to access that function in some way?

Check the manufactures website for a compiler. This is just a hunch, but I think it;s more likely that they'll offer C/C++ than basic. C is the traditional 1st compiler for an architecture and it's unabashed exposing of hardware guts makes it better suited for low level programming, especially on slower hardware. If you're really unlucky they might not offer anything other than assembly. In that case, if the only language you have is basic, I'd consider seeing about exchanging it for a different model that does support a higher level language if possible.

U mean that u want to use the BASIC language for
programing PIC .
There are some compiler availble in the market for
it but i fear they are expenisive .

hi i want to design a circuit to control Ac moters and fans for this perpose i want to use microcontroller and all the devices that i am using are control through this microcontroller i doing a project of home appliances controler control through mobile and internet for i have on off the lights through my computer using a circuit throug com port now i want to ragulates the moters and want to control all the circuits that i have design through this microcontroller and this microcontroller circuit control by my central server so i need help on PIC16F84 to write a code so that it can control AC moters and all my circuit's i am wating for this salution and the circuit if any body want to help me i will be greatful plz messages if any one have salution

with Electronics then u need some good help or study for some time.
PIC is a good microcontroller u can use it for ur task , u can
even use 8051 .

u can use print-screen button to capture the current screen and then paste it in ms-paint for further editing & use. if u need software here is one for u.

gadwin capture is also free, I believe both the above software and this one supports timed captures too, so you can just set it up to capture every 10 seconds to a directory and take which ones you prefer, or snap the shots one at a time which ever you prefer.

I'm writing here out of desperation, I know it's not a general C++ topic but I've been unable to find any smartcard specific forums after a lot of searching.
I'm trying to talk to an ACR30 USB smartcard reader via the PC/SC Microsoft Winsmcrd.dll api.
The smartcard manufacturer is ACS and they're good for obtaining API manuals etc but the examples provided just won't work.
The smartcard model I'm using is a AT24C16, which is listed amongst the compatible cards. This card is a memory card and PC/SC doesn't allow for memory card writing, but ACS have provided methods to do this and written a manual specifically for PC/SC memory card access.
for example, the following copied code (except for reader name) returns error code 0x80100066 "The smart card is not responding to a reset" ie no response from the card

I think this is a common model for smartcard developers, so I was wondering if there's anyone else out there who has worked successfully with this unit and who could give me some guidance.
