This sample shows how to be notified of a device being plugged in or removed from the system. It uses the WMI's Win32_DeviceChangeEvent class. The class is only available in Windows XP or 2003. Add a reference to system.management for this example.

Hi! I wonder if someone can help me with writing a simple application that can work with a fingerprint scanner and saves the result image in tiff format? I tried to use methods like for usual scanners, but with no luck (((

I dont think the scanners submit pictures to your computer. AFAIK they only transmit a "unique ID" generated from your fingerprints unique features.

Well, the most secure scanners actually don't submit any pictures, but the non-secure ones (like MS Digital Persona) do (and they even show theese pictures on the screen).

I maxed out my memory of my desktop and now any video I play has all sorts of sound distortion or static on it.
I've updated the bios and every driver I can think of. I'm guessing that it has something to do with allocated PCI memory being in conflict with real memory, but my BIOS doesn't let me change allocated PCI memory, only AGP memory.
I've moved the audidy 2 card to different slots and changed bios settings to Plug and play OS and still nothing has worked.
Any advice would be great!

this also happened with me when i added some memory to my pc..the built-in sound card wouldn't work anymore even if i removed the new memory!!!!so i put in an old sound card till i find a solution but unfortunately i couldn't...

The problem is that - on a 32 Bit OS - your memory adresses and PCI addresses conflict (as you already recognized). You should see if there is a "Memory Hole"-Option in your BIOS and toggle it. Additionally, there might be a "Remap memory" option, which you could also activate. Otherwise, the only thing you can do is downgrading to 2 GB.

I upgraded to the lastest bios and there is no such option. 
How can intel say that their mobo supports 4 gb without telling me that it doesn't work correctly? I might be able to understand the oversight on a server board, but on a desktop mobo like this one?
They mention what SHOULD happen it in their documentation, but don't tell me how to configure it or address it or anything. Maybe this is all automagical and there is a probelm with the sound card not telling the BIOS that it needs some more memory or something. who knows.

"The D875PBZ utilizes 4GB of addressable system memory. Typically the address space that is allocated for PCI add-in cards, AGP aperture, BIOS (firmware hub), and chipset overhead resides above the top of DRAM (total system memory). On a system that has 4GB of system memory installed, it is not possible to use all of the installed memory due to system address space being allocated for other system critical functions. These functions include the following:
- Memory mapped I/O that is dynamically allocated for PCI and AGP cards
- AGP aperture
- APIC and chipset overhead (approx 18MB)
- BIOS/firmware hub (approc 2MB)
The amount of installed memory that can be used will vary based on add-in cards and BIOS settings. For example, if the PCI cards are requesting 200MB of system memory and the AGP aperture is set to 256 MB in the BIOS setup program, there will be approximately 3.54 GB of memory that can be accessed . . . All installed memory can be used when there is no overlap of system addresses. For example, all of the system address space can be utilized on a system that has 2GB of installed system memory, AGP aperture set for 256 MB, and the PCI cards are addressing 200MB of system address space."

I've been searching for a way to do this and so far all efforts have failed :P
When i set a global mouse hook, no event is detected when i press a mouse tilt...just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
I dont even think its possible to set a key to its action in microsoft's intellipoint software...thats the reason i'm doing this...i want to bind those keys.

Hi,
I need to write a program that controls a camera we use in the lab and get the data. But to do that we need to call some system dll's. (This is because the camera connects to the computer through the USB port and we pretty much have to write the driver). We are actually using Matlab for data processing, but I couldn't call some functions because they need pointers, and Matlab apparently doesn't support pointers. If anyone knows anything about making pointers in Matlab, that would be greatly useful too.

Try googling for "dual photography" and "SIGGraph" and contact those guys. They use a digital camera for image processing with matlab, and I believe they released the source. If you cannot use the source (if its released) you could at least ask them for a few hints.
OT: That dual photography thing was awesome. With one camera and a digital projector they could generate pictures of the photographed images from the projectors point of view.
They had the camera pointed at the back of a card (ace of spades I believe) and a projector illuminating the front (both at an angle). By evaluating the pictures of the camera, they could create the image as it would have been if the positions of camera an projector were switched.

AMD is identicle operation as Intel. Even down the SSE/SSE2/SSE3 instruction sets. There are different optimizations for each if you want to improve performance, otherwise everything still works. Work buys only Intel, from XEON to Centrino, I buy AMD at home, I even have the new X2 chip, all my software runs just as well on my home system as work, especially now that I have the X2 chip since my software has always been multi-threaded, since 1993.

I would get a AMD64 in case you want to code for 64 bit processors in the future. At least then, you have the option to. A dual core system from intel would only benefit you if you are building/using multi-threaded applications.

You'll see modest gains even if your app is single threaded. If your background processes are consuming 5% of your cpu in a single core proc your main app only has 95% of your cpu time available, in a dualcore setup it can have 100% of a single core. Unless you're buying bleeding edge hardware though unless your background load is heavy you'd get better bang for the buck with a single core than an equivilantly price dualcore.

Hello,
I am interested in building a Media Center PC, to be able to stream recorded television shows to an Xbox 360 (for HD output), and then into a television. However, I have a couple of questions regarding this matter.
I have found the answers to the majority of my questions in the Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition FAQ on Microsoft's website. The three major questions that I have not found answers to are:
Can I connect the Media Center PC and use the Local Area Network on the Media Center PC? (Can I view the Media Center PC's files, play LAN games with Media Center PC on a different computer that runs Windows XP? Also, could I use a network printer on the Windows Media Center PC?)
Would a dual core processor, a AMD Athlon 64 Bit 3800+ X2 have more power or perform more efficiently than (for an example) an AMD Athlon 3800+ single core processor?
Another question to the folks that have used Windows Media Center 2005 is that, can I stream videos to other devices that haven’t been recorded using Windows Media Center? (Could I send previously recorded television shows to the Xbox 360 for playback on the television even if the videos were not recorded using the built in features of the Media Center PC?)

Buffer the parallel data and move them out into the serial, it can be done with a buffer chip like 74HC244, but remember to take care of the timing, the easier way of-course is to write a program for a PIC or any other microcontrollers that you might have to take in the parallel data and transport them to the UART,
