I'm playing around with resources files, adding images to them etc, but I saw that you can also add string values to it, how advisable would it be to add a connection string in that, for example database connection string?

Hello,
Can you give additional information what you want to achieve?
I have used resource files (for the string values) mainly dealing with the localization issues, whereby my application interface has to be in difference languages etc, and resource files provide great help. Otherwise, using resource files to keep your images etc..embeds the resources in your assembly, thus you won't need any other extra files such as .jpg etc..
The connection string can be a constant in your code as well. Does this help?

I learning myself C# and came across this, so there's nothing I want or need to do, just wondered how it worked and what it is for. The fact that you can load icons and images appealed to me because I didn't need to include them to the solution, just added them to the resource file and reference them from there.

Normally, you would use this to store localized versions of text. Instead of using the text "Hello" in your program, you would have a localized resource which contained the text and you would just use the resource instead. This means that you can create internationalized applications just by swapping resources.

In a sense, yes. You create localized resource files and by dropping them into certain specially named folders, your application will be localized base on the relevant resource. For instance, if your culture is FR-Fr, then by dropping the localized version into the Fr-fr directory, you will see a localized French version.

Thanks for the info was just curious. I thought maybe there was a way to dynamically load them. As an example (off the top of my head) if you had an app to teach a certain subject and you wanted to aim it towards different levels of audience you might have a beginners, inter. and pro and have resources for each.

Usually this type of data would go in the app.config file. That allows it to be changed without a recompile, and also allows it to be encrypted (although that limits how easily it can be changed.)

I just had trouble to read the string from the file. I know its something like...
System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings but got the message that the ConfigurationSettings is absolute and is replaced by ConfigurationManager, but when I try to use it, it doesn't recognize ConfigurationManager
So I just wondered in what type of event you will actually need a resources file?

Unless the connection string is never going to change, it isn't a good idea to put it into a resources file. The resources file requires a recompilation to cope with changes to it. You really should look at using the humble config file for storing connection strings.

hi,i am having a form with many controls..like combo,text,radio...
and i am creatign a an XML file and storing controls values...
in an xml file...
but if i change the controls values and saved it it will overwrite...
Is their any method to append the xml fiel for new set off values...
using Xml Dom

I am making an window application and creating set up for that. But as we all know that this application will run on client computer if and only if .net framework is installed on that machine. now if framework is not installed on that machine then it will install the framework...but before installing the framework it prompts user to accept the licence agreement. i want to skip this step in my installation. so do anyone know how can i do it?
My working environment is c# .net 2005 window application.

I don't think it is possible to make the .NET installer skip the MS license agreement and if it were I think it would be illegal as it is a binding agreement to the terms and conditions of Microsoft to use the framework.

Ok ..actually the problem is that i want to make my installation a very striegh forward. End user has to click the setup.exe once and whole the set up will finish with out taking any sigle input from the user in any case. so when i run the setup if framework is not installed then it will install the framework silently behind the screen.
Can i run third party exe from my installer?

What's the difference between Application.Exit(), Environment.Exit(), this.Close(),...?

this.Close() will close the current window and not necessarily close the application.
This should help with the difference between Application.Exit() and Environment.Exit():

1. Create a "Uninstall.bat" file and include the following line:
msiexec /x {your product code}
(Replace the "your product code" with your product code GUID.)
2. Add the BAT file to your application folder.
3. Add a shortcut that points to the BAT file and move this to "User's Program Menu".
4. Set the "ShowCmd" property of the shortcut to "vsdscMinimized".

Hello,
I have a problem with my site and I am searching for a solution for allready 2 weeks. I hope someone here can help me.
I made a website by using visual studio 2005. The website is writting in ASP and C-Sharp.
Its a really big website where people are be able to upload pictures, mp3s and even chat with eachother.
Info
The website is made for a computer without harddisks. In the computer is a flashcard with a webbrowser on it.
When the computer starts its automatically loading the browser with the site.The site is on a server. Every client has an account with some space to save some pictures or mp3s.
That space is on another server where I store all the files.
If I get this done it will give me allot of power. I hope I can get it done.
Problem
Now I want to make an upload system so people can upload their pictures or mp3s to the server by using an USB-STICK. So the filebrowser should be integrated to the website and have the same layout as my website. It also should go imediatly to the USB-STICK and should not see the flashcard.Another thing is that I want to do it in ASP or C-Sharp and not using javascript or somthing else. I wonder or its possible but I hope so :P
