Whatever else can inspires a programmer other than seeing his application is really used by the fellow clients???

I'm quite surprised to see praise so low. I personally find it to be the greatest motivator, however, lack of cash can certainly be a demotivator (sorry, but it's a classic motivational theory thing -- Herzberg).
Of course, if I were on a project (which I'm not, I'm just a student now -- if only I had a sponsor for my final year project, but that's a different matter  )) and it needed a boost I'd certainly kick my own ass into gear if there was a bumper cash stash at the other side. On the day-to-day things though (speaking from experience on my industrial placement) it was recently great to hear people thanking me for knocking up some web app, or getting something to work that had been a pain in the ass before.

To me, the unfortunate thing about getting praise is that it often requires little thought and little effort. "Good job, we really appreciate that." While praise is nice to receive, many times there just isn't any impact to those that give it.
Cash, on the other hand, does have an impact, regardless of the amount. It is an indication that there is some sacrifice from the giver. Expensive gifts, while seemingly nice, can also be handled "automatically," so again there isn't much thought or effort put in to giving them.

If the cash is token, then I would rather have the one of the other options. A token raise or bonus would more than likely tick me off.
The question then should be: what is considered token?

We used to use token ring, but switched to Ethernet a few years ago.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

What use is it ? So you can sit at home and work on your own projects ? You don't get paid for those.

Actually that is not always true - you may benefit from the effort put in hobby projects in your next job.

Extra time of is like getting more money. You still get paid for that day, but you are at home in your underroos. Unless you have a reason not to go home like I sometimes do. =-(

First I thought about choosing Seeing your application actually being used, but the sub-title fo the question says What token of appreciation from your boss or your clients most inspires you?. If our clients wouldn't use our software, they wouldn't be our clients. Therefore the last option is superfluous IMHO.

Welcome to the world of writing software on contract to the U.S. Federal Government.
I work for a large defense contractor. Often time, software is developed as a proof-of-concept or a prototype for the "real" project, which will come later. Unfortunately, that means a lot of it is never touched again. After five years there, I have a directory with about two dozen programs, most of which were subsequently abandoned.
Your (and my) tax dollars at work, I'm afraid.

After an elongated speech emitted mangled from a new tongue, it has come to my attention that the information presented does not belong above as it is. For those that inspire to conspire for settlements as a certain percentage above also do (as a percentage), it should be noted that the government is quite a similar issue and perhaps should be placed appropriately. Despite the complicated relationship between the government and money which can easily be simplified (although difficult at times), it should be noted that the work they are paying you for is paid by them for doing work that they don't do... at least not here.
I'll leave you with that thought for today.

In addition to your reasoning, 'Seeing your application actually being used' is not a 'token of appreciation.'
