Well they do have some new security features like.......
Hide the setting so it is more difficult to disable automatic updates or turn of UAC.
And of course if UAC is disabled then some Apps won’t work correctly and won't tell you why 
And many more security features.

Thinking back to the time when it was first sold for about £20 in the UK, I can now say to myself it was the best £20 I never spent.

I have in excess of 300 start menu items, each of them accessible with two clicks. How many dozens of swipes would it take for that -- also bearing in mind that a lot of programs with completely different functions have similar names, and that a lot have names that don't actually tell you what they do?

The start menu does exactly the same thing without switching you to a completely different screen to do it

We used to have Desktop icons before search, and that's effectively what the Start screen is (or just a more integrated version of the Apple Launchpad)

OK, I think everything is subjective, so maybe there is no point in discussing here. I only find too bad how everything new always "suck".
According to the amount of "xxx sucks" posts, I suppose most people here must still use WinNT with Visual Studio 6 on their computers, because these were soooo better than everything that was released after them...

- "Arachnophilia" has got nothing to do with spiders.

How about because, for example, I have 18 different programs (many of which have multiple executables) for creating/editing diagrams/graphics.
All I have to do, with the start menu, is go to the "Graphics" sub-menu, and all of them are listed for me there, so I can choose the one I want.
What search string should I use, to match that perfect functionality "All graphics/diagram editors"?
And arranging baby-blocks by program type is a damned sight more time-consuming than dragging menu items to different sub-menus -- not to mention that you'd still have to sweep through page after page to find the program groups.

Perhaps your degree course should have included something about using sub-menus -- but if you don't use a computer for lots of different things, e.g. only for Visual Studio, e-mail, and browsing the Interwebs, the OS GUI is pretty irrelevant: they'll all enable that for you efficiently enough.

I have deleted my post, since obviously the subject is too, well, subjective., and I perfectly understood why Win7 is better suited to your work model than Win8, and why Win8 "sucks".
Plus, your answers are getting very condescending to me (yes, even _I_ happen to know what is a sub-menu), and I have no intention in being bashed just because I happen to be the only one to like Win8.
Oh well, even writing these lines is childish.

My favourite iOS/Android function: Stack Desktop icons to create directories.
That should have been in every OS GUI since day dot -- and it's still not in Windows!

You know every OS is faster when you first install it, right ?
I installed, and ended up pulling out the notebook battery, after an hour of updates installing ( on super fast internet, it was not downloading anything ), and messages like 'Windows will restart in 2 days to finish installation'.

1) It's not OSX.
2) Under the covers, it's an improvement on Windows 7. (Even though I've adapted by putting everything I need on the desktop or taskbar, and replaced all the full screen metro crap apps, I'd rather they just made a Windows 7.1. I do miss Aero.)
3) The ribbon on Explorer has proven useful when turning on/off "Show hidden files".
I should add that the start screen was helpful the other day. I'd installed an app, though I'd checked to put it on the desktop and hadn't. I had no idea what the executable name was (it wasn't what you would have though based on the installer and company.) I opened the start screen and there it was.

Yeah, I am sure some things are improved. And I installed a start button replacement and have decided to remove it, better learn the new than try to turn it in to the old. My first day was pretty hellish though.

Spent the morning at the Remembrance Day service with my daughter who is in The Brownies then a good few hours down my allotment with my mum in the afternoon.
Then taking my mum home I was waiting to turn right at a junction when there was a loud skidding of tires followed by a massive impact to the back of my car. When we came to a halt again about 60 foot further down the road leaped from the car, looked back to where the car that had hit me was sitting with almost no front end and pissing liquid all over the road.
Severe lower back pain so I rested against my car and stayed there til the ambulance and fire brigade turned up. They put me on a spine board, immobilised my head, lifted me onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
The other woman had her car roof cut off and lifted out then loaded into another ambulance.
They eventually decided I had no spine fracture and let me go home, aching like f*** just about everywhere, my mum has whiplash and a concussion.
My car (a Mondeo) came off considerably better than her Ka, but the boot is deformed, possibly a back door, haven't had a good look at it yet. Going to be a fun morning on the phone to my insurance and finding somewhere to work out exactly what is wrong with it. At least my dad was able to drive it home and avoid the hundred odd quid it would have cost for the police to remove it.
Christ but I ache. Sore neck, shoulders, back, bruising across my chest from the seatbelt. But nothing that won't heal shortly enough.
