Sadly, the deeper reality is that the computer is no longer seen as having anything to do with work. It's a vehicle for mindless info-entertainment. Look at the typical demo - see the weather, see the stock market, watch a movie, get notified instantly of farcebook and bird-sh*ts, etc.
You're right about one thing - it's all designed so that we don't work. But the motivations have nothing to do with alleviating the drudge jobs.

Oh, I agree - I think most of here do actually useful things with computers. But we're the minority, the "average consumer" probably just loves all the bling.

1 - The Industrial States get back their fair share of taxes instead of subsidizing the rural states (see Moocher States).
2 - Farmers stop depending on socialist programs like government price supports and subsidies. They hate socialism, don't they?*

One of my coworkers menace me with throwing the new corporate windows 8 laptop out the window, after several days on fight against it. I cowarly installed windows 7.
I could imagine the novelty creators hell. One of their keyboard key is changed every hour. Remember: change is always good.

I remember complaining back in the day about moving from command line to Windows 95 and how much less productive I would be. A similar UI shift happened with Windows 8. I don't like Windows 8, but it is what came with my new work laptop. Rather than throw a fit, I went with the flow. There are things I don't like about it, but I've learned to work with it. After a week, I was fully productive again.

There's nothing essentially wrong with operating systems that hide everything from the user, and only allow him a reduced control set -- examples are everywhere, from fruit machines to TVs to microwave ovens -- but the UI of a computer computer, the type that people use to work/code/make a living, needs to look and feel like a computer, and have a very large control set.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Windows 8.1 desktop bears an uncanny resemblance to Windows 3.1?
Perhaps they think they can sell us all the post 3.1 versions again with different names. Talk about optimal code reuse!
