In my case it was the 14 goto statements in a short method that caused her to swoon. Apparently she misunderstood when someone had described me as being the "go to guy" in the group.

Perhaps in Hong Kong you aren't seen as sexy.
However in Europe geeks are major league sex symbols: we have to "Beat them off with a stick" and pretend ineptitude with anything electronic if we want a quiet drink... 
The only instant messaging I do involves my middle finger.

Nearly half the developers I have met seem to think brushing teeth and wearing underwear are optional. Personal hygiene goes a long way and devs, by and large, seem to get away with not having much, just the bare minimum.

by removing traditional desktop, or making it a lot less accessible, m$ is basically telling us work is bad, we really should consider abandon keyboard/mouse (and our jobs as well, probably linux as well i dont see why command prompt is any less evil than keyboard/mouse) - and let the operating system take over the dirty work. Human being should just sit back and chill (ask the Saudi prince, only poor people work) - just as what they promised back in the 1970's? That computer is to alleviate human being from having to work right?

Our gov't is doing quite well at alleviating people from having to work (at the expense of those that do work, mind you.)
Sadly, the deeper reality is that the computer is no longer seen as having anything to do with work. It's a vehicle for mindless info-entertainment. Look at the typical demo - see the weather, see the stock market, watch a movie, get notified instantly of farcebook and bird-sh*ts, etc.
You're right about one thing - it's all designed so that we don't work. But the motivations have nothing to do with alleviating the drudge jobs.

sorry can't really appreciate what you're saying when i am coding past midnight fixing sh*t which i presume most of us here dont consider "entertainment" (but mindless yes lol)
