I wrote a website for a reasonably well placed football club. Have maintained and administered for the last five years. Because they are "new media" illiterates I was given carte blanche over the site et al.
A couple of day ago the social media, faceboook f***wit crawler administrator sent me an email asking for the keys to the web hosting castle so that the "New Website" can be deployed by the sponsor he has engaged.
WTF!
So far I have been gracious, but these idiots don't realise that the domain is registered to yours truly.
How much $ for me to be even more gracious and hand over the domain?

I would assume that a reasonable quantity of beer tokens should be involved, yes - particularly if you paid for the registration, hosting fees, et al.

They have paid me for the site ( a modest sum as they are a development club supposedly running at not for profit.
I have not even seen screen shots from the dev of the New Site. Why would I want to involved if my code-base is not?

It's a football club therefore administered by idiots. A mate has talked some twat manager into allowing him to build a NEW site for them, probably the mates kid who needs the experience.
Be gracious, extract a few beer tokens and some minimum recognition and let it go.
If on the other hand they have hired another professional dev then screw them for all you can get, be a bastard, and offended and irate bastard.

They are however sponsored by a multimillionaire that happens to be a close associate of mine.
I am tending towards taking the high ground and handing over the reigns with minimum fuss.
If they pull my strings however, (and yes they are using prof devs) I could become a little obstructive.

Is there any money involved in the site? Advertising? Support? Certainly someone paid for the domain name?
Does that money come from that person or you?
If the answer to that is yes (either one of you) then before making a decision should should at least discuss your concerns with that individual. Maybe that is something that they wanted. Maybe they are totally oblivious to the decision and they want you to continue to do it. Given your relationship you should at least make sure of what their opinion is first.

You developed a web site for them and now they want to deploy a new one.
You registered the domain name yourself - but did you explain to them what that meant?
Surely you are now essentially holding them to ransom by keeping the domain name to yourself?
sounds to me like your just being precious - why the hell shouldn't they develop a new site and have it maintained by someone else.
