Or it is a Cortosis crossguard + saber, that way it blocks lightasbers and projects its own blade. The uses of that blades may be psycological (it does, a lot, and it is typical of Sith fighting) and parry-lock breaker. In the standard Form I and Form V parry you end up with your blade horizontal, locked with the opponent's blade vertical and pushing. Pushing your blade towards the opponend may end up killing him even if you don't completely break its assault.
Of course it is dangerous also for the user, if he's not careful enough to keep its side-blades pointing parallel to its own body when parrying he may end up cut by its own. ;D

But, as we know, the lightsaber hilts are eminently choppable by lightsaber blades ( as happened to Darth Maul) so the cross guard would only serve to direct the opponent's blade into the grip - where it will slice through?
