I have puzzled about these my whole life - since seeing them in New Scientist or something like that as a small child.
Amazing to see it is 2 or 3 mm of ice sheet and a gentle breeze moving boulders over such distances!

Here in Bullhead City, just over the hill from Death Valley (we camp there in Summer to cool off), folks have been playing with the scientist-types for generations. When we're expecting a good blow, groups of volunteers head over the hill to the playa and slide them rocks around in apparently meaningful patterns. The trick is to drag them so they make a trench deep enough to remain visible, while leaving footprints shallow enough to ensure the wind will erase them. It's not as easy as you might think, but it's good fun. In fact, it's probably the most fun thing we've had to do around here since NASA asked us to stage a moon landing nearby, back in '69.
We put in a bid for the Mars landing, but I hear Sedona got the contract because of their red rocks and sand. Bummer - that could have been fun!

Very effective if:
a) You can run faster than the enemy, or at least, one of the other victims
b) The enemy doesn't have a weapon with a longer range than you can cover in the time you have

War is a very complex business for the politicians and the generals. To those on the line - the lieutenants, the sergeants, and the grunts, it is very simple - kill the enemy before they kill your brothers. It's very simple and very tactical.

I don't know about that; if anything I think a claim that 90% of pregnant French women drank water at some point during their pregnancy is on the low side; and water and homeopathic quackery are identical.
