I admit to some surprise that you know the term. I was deeply involved in electronics design when the PLL was invented, and spent a lot of time trying to grasp the mathematical model of capturing and tracking the phase shift required to keep the system stable. Fascinating stuff, and so many applications for the technique...

Not quite a perfect simile, but it will do. I actually think the Ouroboros model is more accurate, as the snake will consume itself as it chases its tail, but must necessarily stop at some finite distance from the head, lest it consume its own ability to consume. A PLL develops a response output in proportion to the error signal at its input, but there must always be some amount of error present in order for it to continue to maintain a lock and function properly. A perfect lock will break it.

I believe the image and concept originated in Greece, probably more than a couple of weeks ago. No. Analog phase discriminators also require a fixed error signal to maintain a lock. The major concern with digital PLLs is jitter, which can cause a loss of lock in high precision systems.

My thought was that in analog PLL's there'll always be some noise which will cause an error signal so you wouldn't have to explicitly deal with a zero-error-signal.. ?

Not to defend the site (it was a result of Google search for "today's Moon phase"), but it does list "Mar 20, 2015" and "Sept 13, 2015" under "2015 Solar Eclipses" on this page[^].
Couldn't find the "Next Solar Eclipse" though, so you may be right.
