Just caught the departing spam below and noticed a funny thing, he quoted part of Chris's spiel at the top of the lounge (to justify his post obviously) yet completely failed to read the second paragraph, this does not bode well for his company when he fails to read the spec properly.

I've been following it for the past hour or so. Horrible as you say. And it's far from the only plane incident recently, so I'm stating to think it's kind of a gamble getting on a plane now...
And I work for an airline myself...

Well, considering my notorious luck in both love and gambling, one out of 2.4 million is by far too bad odds for me to not be worried...

Not trying to be funny, but how does a plane flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf crash in the Alps?, it seems to be miles out of its way

I read a theory from another pilot flying the same route that the pilot may have dropped altitude and changed course because of cabin pressure problems. But it is as I said only a theory...

There are some interesting graphics here[^] showing the height that wreckage has been found at compared with the surrounding area, as well as recorded speed and height of the plane. If the information here is correct, it looks like something pretty serious happened about 10 minutes before impact.
In the case of cabin depressurization, you'd have though that the pilot would have veered away from the well known mountainous area..?

Straight line is not always the best route for airplanes (air traffic and weather)
I'd rather be phishing!

I can understand that but its not weather as far as I can tell there is no real bad weather in that area, air traffic - maybe but still looks a long way round

This is interesting[^] it was heading towards Barcelonette, which has an airport. I wonder if the name relevant - confusion about the airports - perhaps a system truncating down to Barcelon (8 chars) or something.
Whatever, the flight path is very odd.

are you suggesting the pilot somehow thought he had returned to Barcelona? well it would explain why the descended in the midst of all those mountains- no mountains around Barcelona are there?

Something along those lines, The did have a distress beacon going, and the article say the data they do have is consistent with a normal landing approach. Used to happen occasionally in the old days, though I would assume with modern systems getting that lost would be near impossible though.
