Damn! What a cruddy smart-meter. The ones we have here all use the ZigBee protocol to form a mesh network. A mate in the retail account division of one of power companies informs me that they've got a granularity of ~30 minutes on all readings so as to better perform load balancing.
Haven't seen a meter reader round these parts in several years now. It also means they can cut-off your power remotely, which netted someone I know a couple of grand after she was erroneously cut-off and the ombudsman hit the company with a big stick. :Laughs: You'd have thought she was going camping with all the battery powered LED lights she had to buy.
Unfortunately, our meters are still a bit crap and the power companies are too frightened to give us the key needed to perform a pull-request on the meter reading with a wireless unit, so we're stuck with counting LED flashes to get 'instantaneous' rate of consumption, or to walk out and look in the box to get a live reading.
The spiders? Meh. You haven't lived until you've dodged a snake on the way to the dunny, only to share the cubical with a red-back spider. Some loos have air-freshner in em, others just have a can (or assortment) of bug-spray.

I find them difficult as well, but it might be worth thinking of a word, and seeing if you can "draw it" in characters? Like my "ANDROID" clue was (as best I could make it) a robot:

I think on windows you can hold alt and type a three digit ascii code
I do the equiv on the Mac then use symba that take my fancy
