I personally find it difficult to separate the story writers and producers from the Doctor. Its a team effort isn't it?

When the story-writers, producers are the same and the doctor changes then you can rate the actors against each other.

To an extent you are correct, but the production team write material to suit the current Doctor and what they feel the audience wants, so if it does go wrong its not just the actor playing the Doctor to blame.
I really don't like the Sonic Shades thing, who's idea was that... the whole idea reflects negatively on the actor playing the part even if it wasn't his idea.

I dunno... It really worked for the Skaro episodes... I got a smile out of that little twist... But yeah, hope they aren't a permanent fixture (I'm one episode behind), because it's just not Doctor Who without the screwdriver.

Apparently so, he was wearing them in a lot of the photos from filming that have come out in the lead up to broadcast.

Hrmm... Well... I'll give it a chance, but I think the gimmick will get old fast.

The problem is, I think, that glasses are glasses, they sit on your nose in front of your face.
The screwdriver you could hold out at arms length, it was threatening, it had clear direction, you could persuade an adversary it was something else, it flew through the air well, it was obvious when it was doing something, and it made a cool noise.
Glasses just sit on your face.

Agreed.
But you have to admit that the shades made his guitar solo just that extra bit more hilarious... And in hindsight, added quite a bit of awesomeness 
So I wouldn't mind if they kept the shades around as a backup gimmick... But they really need to bring the screwdriver back.

I don't.
I have a lot of SF books (paper and electronic), and have read / watched it all my life.
But Dr. Who is a children's sci-fi program, not adult. Compare it to "Torchwood", "The Last Ship", "Star Trek", heck even "Babylon 5" was more adult in theme (once it got to the third season, anyway).

That's complete bollocks. You don't need sex or violence in order for adults to be able to watch it.
Dr Who is for anyone, of any age, should they enjoy watching it, it is designed for, written for, marketed for, and aired at a time appropriate for the old and young to watch.
Torchwood was aimed at adults only.
Other things are aimed at children only.
Dr Who is most definitely not a children's program.
