Hi All,
Currently I am in the process of using VS 2005 for a project with no problems. But as an aside I thought I would try a later version of VS to see if it can be upgraded with out problems. So I go to download VS latest express, and find 2015 Community edition. Not an Express doesn't appear to be limited. Is this really what I think it is (full & free)? I take it M$ are spying on you some how?  Or are they giving the Keys to Kingdom away (I feel the need to listen to the Spin Doctors!)

Pretty much yes - it's the full version, and it's free.
There are terms and conditions though - mostly related to the size of your company - and you should read them carefully: MICROSOFT VISUAL STUDIO COMMUNITY 2015[^] though there is a syummary at the bottom of here: Free Dev Tools - Visual Studio Community 2015[^]
Be aware that if you upgrade a project to VS2015, you won't be able to open it again in VS2005. I would recommend good, solid backups before I started experimentation. If you are using VS2005 on original period hardware, you may find 2015 far, far too sluggish to use...

I haven't migrated to 2015 yet - I only moved to 2013 last year - and I have found that my new SSD makes it really usable! Load time is about 6 or 7 seconds from click to "ready to code" instead of a couple of minutes, and compilation seems faster as well. I suspect that MS developers all have nice fat pipes, and nice big SSD's...and don't give a rat's ass about anyone else.

My biggest issue going from 10 to 15 on my work laptop is that 10 was small enough I could normally run 2 instances and have enough headroom for the rest of my software and mandatory corporate bloat in 8gb of ram. 15's big enough that having 2 copies running will generally start swap chugging when I switch to whatever major application I used least recently. On days when the bloatware is feeling particularly hungry (I've occasionally seen both MsMpEng and the servicehost running updates bloat to >1gb each at the same time and squat there for hours) I've had it happen with only one instance of 15 running.

Bearing in mind, the opening time, the fact that I am pretty much used to the 2005/08 interface and the speed I will not upgrade the project. It's just a relay card that I was looking at using came with an example using Vis C# 2010 so I thought to upgrade itand just use it for reference.

The interface is pretty much the same (in the case of 2013, once you get rid of the Goth look, and the SHOUTY menu). But the later versions of C# and .NET do include some pretty useful stuff, that wasn't in 2005.

Yes, Community Edition are feature-rich compared to Express Edition. It's free (You just need to activate using your email.)with few terms: for example, free for individual developer, small organization (revenue less than 1 million USD) etc. Free Dev Tools - Visual Studio Community 2015[^]
I have been using VS2013 community edition and its good compared to previous express editions and working out great.

Yes. I have been using the 2015 Community Edition for a while now, and can recommend it. It is the full McCoy, not limited like the Express versions were. It takes longer to load a project than my 2012 Pro version, but not to the extent that it bothers me. My advice: Go for it, but as suggested above: Backup projects in case you want to go back to 2005.
I do not know why it's free, but I appreciate the fact that Microsoft is not charging for it.

Community edition is virtually the same as Professional edition minus support for TFS and limited to five users per company

The restrictions on who can use Community make that mostly a non-concern. Meanwhile it lets startups, indie developers, and those of us who want to fiddle with MS tools at home have access to most of their goodies even though VS remains prohibitively expensive (especially if you're just working on a codeplexgithub resume).
Now if someone could just convince Jetbrains to offer Re#er community edition. I never realized how much I used their refactoring options until I didn't have them.

I got mine to connect to my online TFS account at home, can't remember if I had to do anything special for it or not but don't think so.
Or is it only no support for offline TFS?
