As shooting moms go, that's a fairly dumb one. Carrying a gun carries with it a responsibility to keep it away from hands not trained to use it responsibly. She failed in several respects the common sense test; tossing a gun in the back seat is not the best way to carry it. I keep mine close, on my hip, and if I have to leave my vehicle in a place where firearms are (illegally) forbidden, it's locked in a secure compartment within the locked vehicle.

I'm afraid the thought or even the need to carry a firearm is very alien to me, not to mention illegal. Seem sad society got that way

The problem is that both the anti-gun lobby AND the pro-gun lobby have bastardized the true reason we have the 2nd Amendment in the first place. It's NOT about hunting, and it's NOT about defense against criminals. It's about having a final recourse when the government becomes tyrannical, or when the country is invaded.
To be honest, I'm surprised the shooting hasn't started yet, since both of those criteria have been met - in spades...

The alternatives are just as bad. The problem is that the government is too big and corrupt, and there is NOTHING the electorate/citizen can do about it. Elections don't change the fact that the American people will be getting screwed. It merely changes who's layin' pipe on us while we're bent over.
We are in severe need of a Constitutional re-alignment, and I don't see a viable solution that could in any way be referred to as "non-violent".

Urrm, why do you feel the need to carry a loaded firearm? I can think of situations I have been in where if some one had pulled a gun (or a knife) it would have ended badly as it was everybody backed down and no face was lost. Guns in that kinda situation would have led to blood shed.

Welcome to everyday life in America, and it's not because of law-abiding gun owners, but because of out-and-out criminals, or wanna-be criminals that take offense at something you did/said and happen to have a firearm in their possession (legally or otherwise).

I suppose being a Brit, (not that gun crime does not exist) it just seems odd that someone would carry a firearm as part of their 'every day carry', when I have been to the US everywhere has metal detectors to ensure you don't carry guns, knives, metal cased pens around. I once made the mistake of carrying my mini-swiss army knife and almost got stripped searched because of it!

You make it sound like America is the most dangerous place in the world. I've never carried a weapon for protection and I live in one of the most dangerous areas in America (St. Louis, Missouri). I've never once felt the need to carry a gun. Some will say I'm lucky/stupid for not having a gun.
Carrying a gun is a right in America. It makes about as much sense as two people on welfare having a kid, but its their right too.
I won't try to take your gun away from you, but also please keep it away from me. Gun owners all claim to be responsible, until they have an accident.

For the vast majority of gun owners, gun safety is instinctual, or even considered by them to be "common sense".
If I had children, I don't think I'd even show them a gun until they were old enough to comprehend the inherent dangers with regards to handling them. I certainly wouldn't allow one to be within immediate/easy reach of a child, and would keep them in a locked safe. IMHO, that's simply common sense, and I certainly didn't need (or take) special training to come to these conclusions.
Normal people don't need the government to tell them how to keep their children safe.

1) If nothing else, hopefully, she learned a lesson about how to properly store her firearms.
2) I'm betting the state tries to come up with some trumped up bullshit legal challenge, but I personally think a bullet in the back should be punishment enough.
3) Her being an idiot does not automatically mean the government can infringe on her rights (or mine, or yours).
4) Maybe she'll become a famous advocate for properly securing firearms in the presence of children.

I'd be happy if she started by advocating securing children in the presence of a deadly weapon, cars! If the kid hadn't shot her he could just as easily have been flung forward in an emergency stop and cracked her skull open. Safety does not appear to be a high priority issue!

Looks like a Lincoln Town Car. If that is the case, there should be plenty of room under the hood to plant a tree. I'd guess that the radiator and attached hoses and belts were severed, but if that has a cast iron block and heads, it should last a good 15 to 20 minutes without cooling.
