Bullets on a Campfire
Myth: Bullets in a campfire can fire with lethal force
Adam and Jamie went out to the Alameda Bomb Range to test a variation on the bullets in an oven myths: bullets on a campfire. Without the oven to absorb the blast, they wanted to see how much damage a bullet can do. Jamie rigged up a remote control vehicle to deliver the bullets to the 1000 degree fire while Adam setup triangles of the soundboard + plywood backboard to gauge the bullet damage -- ballistics gel would melt over a fire. Once again, expert Jamie Nelson to supervise.
As expected, the bullet immediately began to fire like popcorn when they were dumped on the 1000 degree fire. The thermal camera was able to catch individual bits of shrapnel firing into the boards.
After the popcorn noise of the bullets had ceased, Adam wanted to put out the fire in order to protect his soundboard+plywood rig from burning. Adam was just going to walk over to the fire, but Jamie recommended carrying one of the blast shields over to protect them. Adam argued his side but was quickly rebutted by the sound of another bullet going off in the fire: "Alright, let's walk with one of these ahead of us."
Just as in the oven myth, it was the bullet casings that did the major damage.

Did you just seriously bring up MythBusters as some sort of source of evidence?

There are probably better testing, but of stuff that is generally available they are going to be the most reliable since they are well known for their testing. there is an awful lot out there, and it seems to be constant, as long as the cartridge is not in a gun, it has significantly less velocity. It would have been nice if Mythbusters had done some additional testing on the danger of an exploding bullet to flesh. You have not brought up any evidence that what he was doing was particularly dangerous. I have done some investigation, and it does not appear to create much risk of permanent injury with minimal protection. Of course hard to prove never have a risk.

That's actually not true. Without a barrel to constrain the bullet's travel and allow for acceleration, the bullet leaves the mouth of the case with almost no energy or velocity.

I'm not going to suggest that it was safe, but he was actually dropping the bulllet in molten pewter, at ~200C (depends on the alloy mixture) - in fact, it was in an aluminium (alloy) frying pan, from what I can see!

All these comments about stupidity. I suspect he had already researched the danger before he started. From the video, it appears that at worst he may have a minor wound as long as he wears safety glasses.

Uh - actually, no - as he was surprised the shell casing went through the back foam and into eternity. His assumption about the barrel's acceleration is not particularly useful in that the total (chemical) energy in the system is independent of the firing mechanism. The gun serves as a backstop to prevent disappointing the energy into shell-kinetic energy and the barrel minimizes dispersion of the energy for just a bit longer. The energy in the system is more than adequate to shoot not only himself, but, being the grand-mal a**hole that he is, any innocent bystander in that he's firing bullets in a totally random fashion. Maybe a few broken windows down the street, as well - but let's not get too fussy.

You are assuming. He may not have known exactly what would happen, but he may have checked beforehand to ensure that what would happen was not generally lethal. Mythbusters has done it in an oven, and you can find quite a few videos on YouTube. Very easy to figure out and it appears he was only working with a 22.

true you can lie on the internet. A little harder to fake video. Plus there are so many examples. there has even been testing with 50 cal cartridges.

I guess you do not trust Mythbusters either. There are probably better sources than I have found. Okay. The guy has a privacy fence around his yard. This implies he has neighbors. He's setting off small caliber ammunition in random directions, endangering said neighbors.
I would assume this video alone would be sufficient evidence to indict him on charges of premeditated reckless assholery, or something similar.

Horsepoopoo. If not constrained by a chamber and a barrel, a cartridge produces no energetic particles. The primary danger presented by an unconstrained cartridge in a fire is shrapnel from the brass case disintegrating, with a range of about 3 feet.
