I was finally able to submit my app C'YaPass to the app store late last night.
It was a huge challenge. I've contrasted the process to the Google Play store here (at CP)[^] recently and I'd like to continue that.
Creating Marketing Images for Store
You have to create numerous marketing images (screen shots, icons, etc) for both Google and Apple.
There is far more leeway with the Google Play setup. I think my app looks quite good in the Google Play store though, even though the process was far easier.
Apple Store had numerous requirements on screenshots.
It finally boiled down to the fact that you have to start an iPhone 6+ emulator and grab screenshots from there. HOwever, I had been running on a 5s emulator and taking screenshots and app store rejected those. It was not obvious and I spent quite a few hours trying to figure it out.
Large Icon Image Size?
The one requirement I found extremely odd was the one to upload a 1024x1024 image of my icon. What?
For one thing they pull the icon out of the Project upload anyways, but why would they want it to be that large? Seems odd.
Dev Acct and Uploading Final Software
I had all manner of difficulty getting my app provisioned under my dev account on App Store.
Apparently I had some test version of my dev team that wasn't registered on my account so I couldn't upload the software archive (package for app on Apple). It failed and was not obvious. Took me hours to figure out.
On Google PLay you log in as your dev acct and upload your software and set everything up. It's quite an easy and streamlined process.
Finally I got everything right and attempted the upload of the code from XCode (apple dev studio). It failed with a cryptic -22421 error. Luckily I just tried it again and it worked. Totally not sure why.
Also, once it completed the upload via XCode IDE, it is not obvious that once you do that you have to switch back iTunes Connect to do more stuff there. Then the upload doesn't show up where you expect it to on your project. Lot's of confusion.
About 8 Hours For Deployment
Well, it's finally out there, but the deployment alone literally took me 2 days since it had to be done from my Mac which isn't always available to me. Over all it took about 8 hours to figure it all out. Phew...
Again, Google Play deployment took me about 20 minutes. Wow.

I went from an empty project to submitted to the app store in 12 hours, reviewed and ready for sale the next day with no issues. 
Ah, I see you have the machine that goes ping. This is my favorite. You see we lease it back from the company we sold it to and that way it comes under the monthly current budget and not the capital account.

Also, check out this SO question I had to post. Even though the image sizes were exactly the right dimensions the app store rejected them:

Also, I'm amazed you got through all that stuff with Archiving the app and setting up your id and all that in one day.

I use a Windows 7 machine in my current assignment (allocated by my customer) with Visual Studio 2015. I'm working on a complex financial application written in ASP.NET (WebForms!) 12 years ago and hacked ever since. I also develop and maintain their iOS apps.
I own a number of other machines - 3 x Windows 10 development machines (Visual Studio 2015, Rider EAP) for .NET web and desktop application development, 2 x Apple MacBook Pro (XCode, Rider EAP, Android Studio plus Adobe CC) for developing native iOS and Android apps and some .NET Core development and 1 x Ubuntu 16.04 ThinkPad (WebStorm, Rider EAP, IntelliJ IDEA) for .NET Core and Java web development. I use them all pretty much equally, although the MacBook is the weapon of choice for design work thanks to the screen and trackpad.
[Edit] Gosh, I forgot my Amiga A1200!  I even have a copy of the software (HiSoft Power BASIC[^]) I used back then to develop applications.. I still play around with it occassionally these days when I get time.[/EDIT]
I'm not sure if you're using XCode for iOS development, you didn't say? You can submit your app directly out of XCode - the only thing you need to do on the iTunes website is set up your app details. XCode shows [which icons you need^] (you should try and supply all of the required sized).
Outside of my day-to-day work, I develop apps for myself. The app that I mentioned was dreamed up on a Saturday, coded and submitted on a Sunday and live in the app store on the Monday. It's a simple app, easy to design the icons for (although it's about to go through a re-design once the corresponding ASP.NET/Angular site is finished..
iPhone version[^]
iPad version[^]
Why two versions? The functionality between the apps will diverge with the iPad version having more features. No point putting that into the iPhone version as it won't be used (or seen).
There's a lot to be said for publishing the simplest version of your app then updating it with additional features on a regular basis. There were two reasons for developing this app:
- I saw a need for it (saw a few people handling cash, issuing hand-written receipts, doing manual arithmetic on pieces of paper), and
- I wanted to see if I could go from zero to live in a day (I like these kinds of challenges ).

I agree. That was the model I was hoping to take on too.
Some say that apple makes it difficult to release updates, but I'm hoping that is not true.

So far for me, the timescales have been the same after submission.
It's certainly easier not having to create all the online data each time, but remember that you need to create a new release on the website before you try submitting it, and the version numbers have to match exactly.

Update:
the app has been in the status: "Waiting for review" for almost 36 hours now.
There's no activity at all that I can see.
I guess this takes a while.

36 hours does seem like a long time, I noticed that they don't work 24 hours a day.
My status change was around 5pm GMT (not sure what that translates to in $)..
