Careful. I've tried this and failed. Windows 7 and earlier would allow you to look up the key, Windows 10 has a fake key, and it won't work. The oem key you need should be on a label on the machine somewhere.

As for the fishy Microsoft licensing stuff - you're "safe" if you pay full retail license for everything Wink | ;) but no one ever does that. I'm sure if you poked around certain auction sites, you could come up with numerous ideas for obtaining a legitimate key.

I challenge anyone to make sense of Microsoft's licensing agreement.

To the original poster - I use VMWare extensively. For Windows 10, all you need is either the DVD or an ISO file. See: Download Windows 10[^]

Once you have installation media, creating it is trivial - I'll leave it to you. VMware also has a tool that will allow you to absorb an existing physical installation into a VM. I'll be doing this with my previous laptop installation.
