I'm heading to ng-Conf in salt lake City on 13th April.
Any CPers in that neck of the woods, or know the area, can recommend anywhere to hang out the weekend before the conference starts?
we plan on finding a shooting range, but other than that, looking for anywhere either nerdy or serving good, inexpensive beer & food!!

Hill Air Force base has a pretty good museum. It's a 30-40 minute drive (north) from SLC. Sometimes, the Mormon Church Museum (in downtown) has interesting exhibits. If you have kids, there is the Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, about 20 minutes south of downtown SLC. (Also for kids, going another 10 minutes south, there are Museum of Natural Curiosity and, next to, a Natural History museum.)
Judas Priest is at the Vivint Arena on the 13th.
Not a beer fan, but Uinta Brewing Company made great sandwiches.
Another favorite lunch before moving were calzones at the Rusted Sun Pizzaria.
You could go to Pioneer Park and buy some drugs. Or, if you have several days, drive up to Yellowstone Park--it's only a five hour drive.

Park City is a short drive from Salt Lake City and has many excellent eating establishments and cool shops. Also there may still be skiing there and also in Big & Little Cottonwood canyons.
Visit Temple Square

Just had what I thought was a brilliant idea.
How many times have you been editing code (or your latest novel) and highlighted text you want to replace - then realised you first need to highlight the text you want to replace it with?
(OK, maybe not all that often, but often enough!)
so, how about some key/mouse combination that is effectively:
Select Destination for paste.
Select source for copy.
say, for example, you have:
var foo = "hello world";
var result = SomeMethod("G'Day world");
You drag the mouse over "G'Day world" (or otherwise highlight it)
Press ctrl-alt-V (select paste destination)
Your mouse cursor changes to something appropriate.
You drag the mouse over foo (or otherwise highlight it)
Press ctrl-alt-C (select copy source)
the result
var foo = "hello world";
var result = SomeMethod(foo);

I do that once in a while. Not frequently enough to add it to my editor... yet.
As to that, I started adding a feature to my editor some months ago and just haven't gotten around to completing it.

Here is how I handle that... This works in any windows edit area.
1. type xxxxx to remove the current selection, but leave behind a nice reselect target.
2. highlight the desired replacement text, double click would work in this case.
3. Ctrl+C
4. double click the xxxxx
5. Ctrl+V

OP perhaps hard coded too much "logic" or/an assumptions of what/when shifts are.
Doing a similar project for a manufacturing company, in particular they want to capture real project man hours, sure they very concisely told me what the typical scenario is including a very precise definition of what a "shift" was (need to to capture OT) - there were no exceptions. 3 months on there's never been a single job that fit the standard scenario, and yes, what they define as a shift now has variants (heck, what they define as a "man hour" has variants.)
There's nothing to hard code, but regardless there nothing that should be hard coded.
For sure shifts have nothing to do with time of day, duration, break intervals... and even less to do with any other shifts parameters even in the same role.
I don't understand the OP's issue - regardless situation if "shifts" overlap or not (which seems to be his "problem") should have been irrelevant from the very start. Sounds like a very poor implementation, and I will go as far to say there's really no excuse for that.
