To me it seems likely it will never be.
They have been attempting it for 70 years. There are many examples of things that have rapidly progressed in that time frame and AI is not it.
The only progression is applications that are better at pattern matching. Pattern matching however is not thinking.

Oh, VS? Here's something I discovered in VS 2015 over the last few days (I just confirmed that it doesn't do this in VS 2010).
Copy the following C# code into VS:
int x = 0 ;
using ( System.IO.TextWriter t = System.Console.Out

Then close the parentheses of the using statement.

Artificial Intelligence compared to Machine Learning. Partly a marketing gaff that got way out of hand, and related to the discussions last year which had the scientist actually working on AI, angry with the comments from people like Elon Musk that AI needs laws implementing.
current AI is very infant.
Machine Learning which you have lots of things being done, such as your email spam handling.
Machine Learning is more specific at what it is trying to do. Have multiple Machine-Learned tools which can be called on for when they are appropriate.
Want shopping - call Amazon Alexa.
Want generic image recognition - call googles image .
Want image recognition for different hot dogs - call the HotDog image learned one which is better on hotdogs then the generic one, but bad on everything else.

It is really useful...to Google, as evidenced by the ad revenue. As far as your experience, Google knows what is best for you, resistance is futile.

The trouble is, no one can define what intelligence is. It's one of those terms like consciousness, spirituality and so on.
We think we know it when we see it, but we're all really just blind people trying to describe the entirety of an elephant based on what we feel from where we are standing.
The best we can do at the moment is approximate certain qualities.
But that's merely my perspective.

AI is the old saying: if you don't make decision then someone or something will make it for you. Most of the time, you won't like the out come.

You seem to assume that the AI is trained to deliver meaningful ads. It isn't. It's trained to sell. And if that requires driving you crazy first, that's what it will do! Then, once you're at the stage where you dismiss almost every ad, they'll start inserting relevant ads, and if you don't immediately buy that stuff, they start posting unrelated ads again until you do. In the end they'll get you to buy everything out of fear they'll start flooding you with irrelevant ads again!

Visiting parents for a week. This is the first time I am feel anxious about air travel. I have traveled a lot within the country and internationally as well. Still I am getting anxious. Why? Here's why:
I hate travel by any mode of public transport. I have spent good 5 years travelling (filled up one passport, partially filled second one) so I just hate that immigration and security checks. I understand it is needed but still. I am sure I will find one idiot who would cut the queue, another one who would "forget" to remove his mobile phone from pocket before security checks, another one who would be in the line to board with seat number not the range those poor guys are shouting at top of their lungs.
Then, the flight is short but will affect my lunch time. So, either I need to lunch at 10 AM or eat at airport. They will have ridiculous prices for simplest of food items. Then it will not even be fresh.
I wish I had enough holidays to just drive there.

Yes,bus travel is interesting, especially in South America.
I like it when the driver says, This is a FARC checkpoint, best if foreigners don't say anything!
Or the Bolivian police decide to do a drug check on the bus and bust the person sitting behind you!
But in northern Bolivia it is impressive to see fields full of sunflowers and ostriches running along side the bus jumping over alligators and the driver says, everyone needs to get off the bus for a few minutes to make sure it doesn't tip over going through the mud ahead, or crossing a river on a wooden barge and they ask the passenger to help pull on the rope. It's definitely more exciting than walking through airports!!

Just Gut up and go . I've flown all over rural South America often in small planes. It's not spo bad, except Mexico, where they made me go through immigration to enter and leave, just to change planes. No problem, just a hassle and extra lines to wait in.

I disliked the security etc too, queue here, queue there too,
but travelling, particularly internationally, all that extra time just lost.
check in 90 mins before, leave home in taxi an hour before that, arrive at destination, plane still needs to taxi, wait for clearance before disembarking..., same crap. Destination Jakarta, permanent traffic jam (except during the anti Suharto riots)
On weekly "90 minute" flight out Monday, back Friday for 6 months. (90 minutes, first/last 15 minutes no electronic devices, meal served, so forget attempting to work - anyway Friday was all about the beer challenge - how many I could get out of the cabin crew, best was only 10 cans coz they too often distracted by other passengers - where's the fairness in that, I'm on a challenge ... me first, them never.)
I digress ... "90 minutes" - yeah, real time closer to 5 hours. 95% of the time is sitting and still feel exhausted. Add in meetings (Mon arrive, & Fri before leave), 1 week = 3 days actual work, yet still feel wasted the whole weekend.
... not doing that again.
